Those numbers

I was just looking at that chart last week. I think it's a joke that they say they are going to have 34 727's in 2005. The flying allocated to the 727 keeps dropping off and we are losing cities. Just lost DEC last bid and, thank Gawd, they stopped flying that terrible SDF-RFD-PHL-EWR thing. Not sure if that's good or bad....

Anyhow, you have to remember that chart is pretty old and management changes their minds daily about these things. On the other hand, I think it's pretty set in stone the deliveries that are coming that are shown on that chart. They already have those aircraft allocated to certain routes.

I think they will continue to displace guys off the dying fleets and onto the MD11 and Airbus without hiring. Also, as you know, our contract allows for the building of some pretty high time lines. The company is using this to work the Bus guys to death, from what I hear. The schedules are really bad on that fleet and the Bus drivers are pissed.

If everyone was going to work week on, week off, 75 hour lines and we weren't parking 727's, we would have been hiring already....but that's not the case. Plus, it's bad form around UPS to be hiring during contract talks....

I don't know about the 727 but we are losing cities like crazy on the dc8 I don't know how we are going to maintain 45 of them. I hope its correct. I heard that we are only approved to operate in china with 747 which I believe is the only saving grace for that a/c.

I hope you are right I could use some more people below me.

Just for a sense of perspective, when you talk about terrible schedules on the Airbus, what do you mean? How bad, and relative to say a typical schedule on the 75?

schedules

It's hard for me to be specific about 757 schedules cause I'm not on that fleet. In general, a good schedule is considered to be week on, week off, domestic, or 12 days in a row international trips. Few people like four on, three off, three weeks a month but the company loves them. I've heard there are few week on, week off, clean, lines on the Bus these days. The lines on the727 were pretty clean, in general, but the company would say we are overstaffed on that fleet.

Anyway, that's good news. They can't go forever without hiring. This week alone...I heard of 5 retirements.
