UPS and Airbus signed an agreement last week that delays delivery dates for 10 A380Fs the cargo carrier has on order and gives both companies the option of terminating the order later this year.
UPS is the last remaining customer for the freighter version of the aircraft. The original delivery schedule ran from 2009 through 2012 (ATWOnline, Jan. 22).
The revised delivery schedule was not disclosed and UPS indicated it may follow rival FedEx and cancel its order. "UPS has been carefully evaluating various options since Airbus announced production delays late last year," VP-Airline and International Operations Bob Lekites said. "This agreement will provide us additional time to evaluate our network requirements and make a decision once and for all as to how best to ensure service to our customers."

Actually, I think we need airbus to be a viable competetitor. Competetion breeds innovation and that can only be good for all of us. Boeing is now launching the 787 and the 747-8, while Airbus will probably get more orders for the A-380 and the A-350.

In addition, Airbus is competing for the US tanker, now I doubt they will get the contract, nor do I think they should for national reasons, but it can only make Boeing try harder to offer a great product, one that does not need the help from crooked politicians and lobbyist.

Hey All,

Airbus is struggling... But remember, if they struggle and take too long to match the 787, then Boeing can charge your airline whatever high price they want for this plane...

As a former Boeing engineer, I agree with you. Competition does the marketplace good, at least in this arena.

A few years ago, Boeing was struggling with scandals and labor unrest while Airbus was surging. Now the tables have turned and the cycle continues.
