How can you easily make $25,000 your first year if you only make $21.50 per hour? If someone could show me the breakdown of a months earnings that would be great. I start there in 2 weeks.

Just be one of those guys who is not afraid to do more than the minimum. 20K is figured at your 75 hour minimum monthly guarantee. Most lines are in the 80-90 range. Throw in the $100 on-time bonus we seem to get every other month and it adds up quick.

Enjoy,

scoot

How realistic is to get 85 to 90 hours of flying per month when you are the new guy? How hard is picking up extra flying?

There's also profit sharing for what it's worth.

You will fly that much after you hold a line. Right now we're seeing FO's come off reserve in about two - three months. 8-10 months from now it might be more like 8-10 months to come off reserve if hiring slows. You'll also be pulling in $400 plus in per diem per month. You can pick up as much as you want IAW FARs once you are a line holder.

FWIW...

To Address the Comments by FlyInLow67:

I am not sure how it compares to flying at Express...as I never flew the line there, but at SkyWest I credited 1267 hours last year(2004). at 21.50 an hour that would easily be more than 25k, actually its about 27240. That's not bad, put some food in a bag and "keep some perdiem" and you could be looking at 30k for your first year. That's waaay better than I did here at SkyWest my first year(around 26k including per-diem...which is about 50% take home for me...I don't spend a lot on trips). That 21.50 an hour for first year FO's was a great win in my book on this last contract for you guys at Express. Its still low, but its better than 19.02. Secondly, that second year comes around awful fast, and you will easily exceed 25k then. I did 42k NOT including per-diem last year. Its not 6 figures, but it is better than 25k. All this to say, Express is a great company with what appears to be a bright future(you never can tell in this industry). My short, four month stint there before 9/11 was awesome...would have come back had it not been for seniority at SkyWest. I don't see the individual picture here, but turning down Express for night freight seems a little bit unwise.

How many former freight dogs have you bumped into at XJET that was so greatful they "survived" 135?

It still amazes me when a captain will write up an arm rest, and MX will be there to atleast do something to it. God I love 121.

As far as the <$20k per year goes, you would have to be pretty lazy to not make 25K. Don't drop tirps, pick up some open time, grab those four day trips with more than two legs per day and you can make some cash in this game.

Fly safely,

um dude...the first year you fly you go were scheduling wants you to fly... you cant pick up trips on reserve...:)

Coex-Fo,
Yes, I was offered the interview, but declined.
Life is great when your 25, not married and no kids, house payment, etc.
I am not totally letting go of the airline dream, but there are other options out there.

While I very much agree with everything else you've stated in this thread, I wish the above were true for me. 5 months and counting for me so far (not that I'm complaining...as a general rule of thumb, reserve has treated me well)......

Sorry, but you are wrong. Only during reserve can you not pick uptrips and must fly where scheduling tells you to. Houston isgetting off reserve in about three months. CLE and EWR are acouple more.

The job is what you make of it.

IAH. Went on reserve in October and as of next months bid still can't hold relief. But I must be getting closer...at least I held the new long-call rsv for Feb and that's a good sign.

...

Maybe it depends on when you were hired but I got online in October andprobably will hold a relief line in March, maybe conversion inFeb. Don't know where these 2-3 month reserve guys are but Ihaven't seen it yet in any base.

There were a few who held conversions in December and thought that meant they were on the fast track to being a line holder without realising that in December folks will bid reserve to get the holidays off meaning that bunch of real junior folks end up with lines working on the holidays.

How long you sit reserve will also depend on what time of year you get hired. For example, in EWR in August, there were something like 240+ lines, while January only had 190. So if you get hired in June, you'll be on line in August, after which the lines begin to drop. Conversely, someone who begin class in December or January will get on line when the schedule picks up. That would imply shorter reserve.

Despite all that, it's hard to say how long someone would sit reserve if hired today, considering that they've already added probably 500 pilots since hiring resumed (someone can probably post a more accurate number).

I was hired in the first new-hire class in Feb. As of the last seniority list update, which includes the first class in Jan 05, there have been about 590 hired in 11 months.

I apologize for the "pimp" comment, but I can't afford to leave a $25,000 a year job for a <$20,000 a year job no matter what the schedule or equipment is.
Yeah, I would love to fly jets for an airline, but until the regionals get thier first year pay up, I simply can't afford to take the cut.

Classic! Let this fool keep making his 25K per year flying junk around at night while you XJT FO's enjoy your new contract making 30K-40K once you get a year or two under your belt. Wont take you XJT FO's to surpass what wonderboy is making in his hor$se$hit nigh piston cargo deadend job. Talk about a shortsighted moron.

First year XJT FO should make around 22-24k after profit sharing and 401k matches.
