Anyone else go into Cahokia for the All-Star game yesterday? I was there in a Baron, and I thought the security a bit unusual. The TFR's and ramp security didn't seem out of the ordinary, but it was the first time I've seen the TSA out in conjunction with the FAA. They wanted to inspect the documents of every pilot that flew in. I've been around VIP ops before, and I've never seen anything like this. The FAA and TSA folks were polite and friendly, and helpful in making sure everyone was straight on the TFR's. I asked what they were going to do with the data, and this was the only time I felt that they were a little bristly with me, and was told that the regs allow them to require us to show them our docs etc. They were using the usual ramp check form, but AFAIK, no one's airplane was looked at. After our doc's were inspected we were given a little FAA/TSA souvenir card. I can understand the FAA wanting to hold RampCheckPalooza, but what's the deal with TSA? Anyway, is this how it is now, and I've just been missing out on all the fun?

I would like to see any federal regulation that grants the TSA authority to do what you described. I have sent many emails to the TSA asking for the scope of thier authority dealing with GA. I have yet to receive a response.

they were thick in denver during the d.n.c. i'm not sure anyone, including them, understands the range and scope of their power, and what they are and aren't allowed to do.

The NBAA warned of this prior to the all star game and stated they would be keeping a close eye on TSA. Perhaps all who experienced this should notify the NBAA of their experiences.

Yep, it did seem a bit odd.

Wasn't our illustrious leader Komrade Barry at the game?

Maybe that had something to do with it?

Well, yes, the Dear Leader was there. But back in the day of George W. it didn't go down like this. I think I'll be ringing the NBAA.

TMMT, were you in Cahokia too?

BASEBALL ALL STAR FESTIVITIES, JULY 10-14, 2009

ATC TOWER OPERATING HOURS WILL BE EXTENDED UNTIL MIDNIGHT ON MONDAY AND TUESDAY, JULY 13 & 14

Expect Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs) and heightened security measures during Major League Baseball All-Star activities in St. Louis. Representatives from the FAA and TSA will be present to conduct security enhancement activities at all area airports during this big event.

Only pilots, airport and FBO employees, and those individuals under their escort will be allowed in the aircraft parking areas.

Security teams will be present in both FBOs to conduct pilot license verifications and reinforce awareness of the TFR & NOTAMS. The primary purpose is to ensure pilots are aware of the TFRs and know how to avoid them.

All TSA personnel will be easily identified by their uniform and identification badge. FAA and other personnel wearing civilian clothing will prominently display their official identification.

Pilots flying on game day are encouraged to check in with one of the security teams located at either FBO. Pilots should present their license and photo ID for inspection when requested. Arriving pilots should check in immediately on arrival to pre-clear security and expedite their departure.

Pilots are reminded of the following FAR Part 61.3 requirement:
“(l) Inspection of certificate. Each person who holds an airman certificate, medical certificate, authorization, or license required by this part must present it and their photo identification….for inspection upon a request from: (1) The Administrator; (2) An authorized representative of the National Transportation Safety Board; (3) Any Federal, State, or local law enforcement officer; or (4) An authorized representative of the Transportation Security Administration.”
