Brand new to FMCs, wondering if there is a demo or simulator you can download to run on a pc?

Someone else may have a better suggestion but you might want to check out the Garmin web site and see if the 400 and 500 level GPS simulators, which you can download for free, are useful to you. If you can operate them well and understand the features you'll be well prepared to get into a FMC.

I had a PC sim for the UNS-1C. It was very good, with a complete database and the ability to do simulated flights. That was about 6 years ago, so I know it exists, but don't know where to get it.

This one's an easy fix...

Go to Universal's web site, get their support number, and call them to get one. That's how I came by mine anyway...

More useless info, but I found a sim for the GNS-XLS somewhere, now I can't find the link! Maybe Honeywell website or such.

More worthless Info

The only one I have seen Flight Safety has. It is just like the one in the airplane and it will even let you fly a route to see it cycle through the waypoints. I can't imagine what that cost but I would imagine they got it from Universal. Again, don't know where you could "acquire" it, but if you do, I have extra database disks that you can have, we just throw them away when expired.

I got the manual for the UNS....

I have a simulator that was marketed a number of years ago. It modeled the UNS-1 and allowed you to plan flights and do everything that you would normally use. Unfortunately this program has become very buggy running on more modern machines the database is woefully out of date and at this point I doubt that it would even work on Win XP. The company is no longer in business, so there is not support.

Check out the Universal website. There might be something available there. At the very least if you are operating an aircraft that is equipped with these units consult the operating manuals. They are required by the FAR's to be available.

Call Universal Tech Support at (800) 595-5906 and they will take care of you, especially if you/your company is a current customer.

Uns Fms

Forget the manual and the software simulator. I tried both, before I played with the actual box in the plane, and found the manual and the software simulator (at FlightSafety) confusing and difficult to understand. Then I got in the plane with the UNS-1C and found it a snap to use, very intuitively easy, at least for most of the functions. (And it was the first time I used a FMC or FMS.) So just play with it in the plane for a bit. Have someone show you how to enter a flight plan (much easier than something like a GNS 430/530), then hit the NAV button; select the FMS as the NAV source for your HSI and you are set. When you get to altitude, put the thing on autopilot, have the other guy watch out the window, then just play with the buttons and see what is in there and what it does. (Probably should put the plane in HDG Hold rather than NAV while you do this.) You'll be able to do most of the stuff you need to do with it after 2 or 3 flights. THEN dig out the manual for the more advanced stuff, and it'll make more sense. I've been flying the UNS-1C (recently upgraded to a UNS-1C+) in a King Air for almost 4 years and it is fantastic. Wish I had one in the other airplanes I fly.
