That is sweet! It looks like a 757 on steroids.

I wonder why it was not designed with winglets?

When a wing is designed correctly it does not need winglets. They are used on wings that where designed before the advent of computer modeling and so forth.

The 777 was the first to be completely designed on computer. That is why it does not have nor need winglets.

Really?? Then why do most new clean sheet designed business aircraft have winglets?

Be careful there dude, if the Gulfstream test pilot that used to post here is still around, he'll tear your head off for that statement. Search back a year or so for winglet threads. He claims that the GV wing was designed with winglets and that it's stuff don't stink.

:-)

PS, he's a little touchy about anything that might, just slightly, imply that his Gulfstream isn't the the top of the heap. :bomb:

Fact is that there are pros and cons to winglets. If you have them you need to increase the stress of the wing box due to the increased flex that the wing imposes. Thus there is a weight penalty.
With the raked wings as the 767-400 and the 787 series you realize many, but not all of the advantages of winglets with out the weight penalty/cost.

Well, it is.;)

What airplane? All I see are two big-a$$ engine pods! -O:cool:O-

Wow, I did not know my statements would cause such a tizzy. Its like I kicked someone's dog or something.

Anyways, its what i heard from an Embraer engineer when asked about winglets on the E145 XR and why some planes need them and others don't. Basically, he said they were used to make up for inefficiencies in the design of the wing.

No bigger ego in this business then a Gulfstream driver. I'm not saying all but many many of them. They are cute little things though aren't they?

Not so sure with the 787, but in the past based upon the intended service use, some launch customers don't opt for winglets. The fuel efficiency winglets provide on some routes/ops don't justify the extra cost.

Seriously?

Thats the 787 not MMA.

If you are talking about the sport of "Mixed Marshall Arts" (MMA), you are quite wrong kind sir. That venue is alive and well. Now if you were referring to the Multi-Mission Aircraft, you are indeed correct... that POS will never get to the fleet.

Take it to the bank!

Who cares what he thinks, the 787 kicks a$$

Sounds about right for the E145, how could a bunch of naked pigmeys design a good wing? I heard the first draft for the 145's wing was Bamboo and dried fig leaves.

In all seriousness, the original E145 wing was to be exactly like the E120's, with TOP mounted jets a la Honda Jet.

Also, most of the systems were designed in conjuction with Boeing. Ever notice that the Hydrolics and Pnuematics are almost identical to the 737. However, I always said that the Electrical systems were designed on a dare :).

Looks great! Pack'em in ten by ten. A cattle car by any other name is still just another cattle car.

Bravo to the designers. (No sarcasm) A true step forward. However, the industry will exploit the toils by filling it to an uncomfortable and barely habitable space to squeeze ever last penny out of it.

A beautiful and majestic bird. I am amazed by your inovation. This is a true milestone in aviation.

Sad to think it will be used to suck as much money as possible out of pax who just want to see their friends and family.

May all airline execs. choke on their tounges in their sleep.

I miss the days when inovation and tech. advancement was for the greater good and not just for profit.

There is something to be said for the experience. That has been lost in recent years.

I took a flight over a glacier in Alaska for not much more than cost, just to see ice that was formed millions of years ago.

There is more to life than making a few bucks.

Shame on those who lessen the value of human experience. It is what we all were attracted to in the first place.

Heard today that July 8th is going to be a big media day for the plane since the date is 7-8-07.
