I wonder why United doesn't do the same thing as the LCC's and bring up the predatory pricing BS. Hey you never know it might work.....

They can't, because the LCC are showing profits and making money on these fares.

Besides, the DOJ could not stick it, when AA was blatantly doing it, no way they can stick it this time !

Did you read the article? It seems that United will try to reduce the ammount of seats but raise fares on the cut routes. They will use TED for the leisure traveler. Same ammount of flights, just a smaller 3 class airplane.

Your thirst for watching thousands of employees lose their jobs is annoying at best. Start an amature analyst message board and try your material there...Oh yea...there already is an amature analyst message board.....USA Today.:D

You just received 5 for fighting, and a game misconduct. I don't thirst for watching thousands lose their jobs. I am one of the ones that think UAL will survive. It will morph to a smaller airline, but will still be around.

NYRANGERS, good post. Lowecur must have forgotten to post the NUMEROUS articles and press releases that show the increased flying to places like China, Vietnam, Zurich, and Hawaii, in an effort to only concentrate on bad news, or perceived bad news.

Hmmm, decreasing capacity where you are losing and increasing where there is money to be made. Sounds crazy. Also, I believe these configuration decisions were made over a year ago, so this is hardly based on any recent developments.

I'd like to continue this, but I loved your analogy. I hope there is a hockey season this comming Fall.

Remember, the ammount of flights will remain the same, just with smaller aircraft. Less seats in a market doesn't nescessarily mean a smaller airline.

So do I. Although I don't relish going to see the Ranger's play. There are actually more Ranger fans in the stands than Panther. I have a friend who actually has Season Tickets and a Panther jersey, but when the Rangers come to town he puts on his Messier jersey.:)

I'll second that!! The Wings are the dynasty. Sorry NYRangers, all that payroll and nothing to show for it.

The axe continues to fall...

United Airlines today began selling tickets for three additional roundtrips each week between Los Angeles and Sydney from mid-December until the end of March. United currently provides daily nonstop service between Los Angeles and Sydney with continuing service to Melbourne, and between San Francisco and Sydney with connecting service to Melbourne. The new seasonal service will increase United's weekly seating capacity between the United States and Australia by about 20% during Australia's peak summer travel season.

Looks like a pretty smart move to me! Offer a high end product to people that are willing to pay for it. I really like the look of the reconfigured 757!

I was in a UAL jumpseat yesterday having a discussion on this very topic. Captain pointed out that what everyone is missing is the fact that this frees up the 767's to do more international flying where the real money is at.

Nobody "missed the fact" because the 757's are going to be replacing 767-200's that are all going to be retired starting in September. Pretty much all they do is fly the transcons and they're going away.

I do think they're smart to go after the higher yield though.

Higher yields!!

Yea, like that's gonna happen. Int'l flying in the future will begin to see pressure, just give it a few years.

I wonder if JBL can convert orders from 320's to 380's.

Int'l flying is the only place the LCC's haven't screwed things up yet.

Go UAL!
