airplane wizard said:Hi folks,
I understand that there was a GA pilot among the passengers on UAL 93. If the passengers had been able to regain control of the aircraft, would he have been able to land a B-757 in one piece? I know that the flight manuals usually have a chart of pitch attitudes and power settings for the different phases of flight. That is the first thing that I would have looked for if I was in that situation. What are your thoughts?
You'd be surprised how it easy it would be to talk a non-aviator through this to a successful conclusion.
Engage the autopilot (1 button push), dial an altitude and airspeed, and 1 more button push to make it go up or down to the selected altitude. From there, dial in the ILS freq, dial an intercept heading, ARM the approach, slow the plane down by dialing a slower speed, gear and flaps and it'll autoland and autobrake to a complete stop on the centerline. 2 more switches and the engines stop and all power to the aircraft is cutoff. Scenario over.
Thanks to advanced automation, this could have ended safely had they regained control of the aircraft. FWIW, I'm absolutely confident a passenger could have been talked through this successfully.
