Hi folks,

I understand that there was a GA pilot among the passengers on UAL 93. If the passengers had been able to regain control of the aircraft, would he have been able to land a B-757 in one piece? I know that the flight manuals usually have a chart of pitch attitudes and power settings for the different phases of flight. That is the first thing that I would have looked for if I was in that situation. What are your thoughts?

You'd be surprised how it easy it would be to talk a non-aviator through this to a successful conclusion.

Engage the autopilot (1 button push), dial an altitude and airspeed, and 1 more button push to make it go up or down to the selected altitude. From there, dial in the ILS freq, dial an intercept heading, ARM the approach, slow the plane down by dialing a slower speed, gear and flaps and it'll autoland and autobrake to a complete stop on the centerline. 2 more switches and the engines stop and all power to the aircraft is cutoff. Scenario over.

Thanks to advanced automation, this could have ended safely had they regained control of the aircraft. FWIW, I'm absolutely confident a passenger could have been talked through this successfully.

What a horror show that was/is.

I just got done watching "Munich" and the closing shot was the Trade Center Towers. What a reverse harbinger.

If you saw "Munich" and you remember the scene where the rubber boats pulled up to the pier in Lebanon...I turned to my wife and said, "It's chopping time!"

Her being Polish, and the FAL wife, she didn't blink.

There comes a time when Zodiac boats and choppers is the only language fuggers understand.

Dude, honest to God, I watched Munich last night first time, and my bro just starts yelling, "zodiac boats," when that scene began.

That was a good movie, in my opinion.

Yes I noticed the towers as well.

Here is a question for you, those guns they used to kill the dutch assasin, what exactly were those, and that was a very intense shooting. She was shot twice, kept moving around, sat down in the chair and the older guy shot her in the head. Zip Guns right?

I can only assume that European gun laws were pretty tight back then, as they are now. The .22 LR bicycle pump with integral silencer wouldn't be too hard to concoct. Did you notice the fumbling for the second shot? Then the third guy jumped in and popped that slut.

When she first propositioned the main character, I turned to the wife and said that as much as I have been on the road...since the 70's, I never seen such a suspect "come on".

I was saddened to see that the most experienced member of the crew was killed by the slut, but I wasn't surprised to see that the main character noticed the smell of the perfume by the hotel room door and then got curious.

For the most part, there were scenes in that movie where I thought they were rookies that were learning new trades of "spy v. spy" on the go.

I believe a licensed pilot could be talked through an autoland. I do not think an average joe could do it. Consider: "Select 110.30 in the standby of the VOR radio, then push the toggle button... " "Huh? What? VOR? Toggle?" The non-pilot would run out of fuel before you could talk them through every single step. Counting on them to drop flaps and gear on schedule would be difficult.

A GA pilot hand-flying a 757, well, I can almost guarantee a no-flare landing. No offense, these guys just aren't used to beginning a flare with their butts 100' above the asphalt. Whether zero flare would create a horrifying bounce followed by a bad PIO (likely) or drive the struts through the wings (less likely), I think the odds of a disaster are pretty high. I don't mean to belittle anyone, I probably would ground loop a 180.

I'll drink to that. They are all heroes every single one of them.

When I got out of United 93 I was pissed. Granted, I'm the most peaceful non-violent guy I know but after that film I felt like I was ready to get pick a fight in the parking lot with the first Muslim looking guy I could find. Kind of freaks me out that the movie did that to me. We must win this war and I'm not just talking about Iraq.

What is it about religion that brings out the worst in humans. Muslims, by far, are not the only extremist fanatics out there. I was doing a furniture delivery the other day with an ignorant redneck who would not shut up about God and Hell. He went on a rant about how evil Catholics are and how they're all gonna burn in hell. I told him my wife was Catholic and how he needed to chill. He starts crying. No sh!t. Crying about how hard it is to convince loved ones that they're going to "burn eternally in hell." Said his entire family wouldn't listen to him. What a jerk. They're everywhere!

Have you all seen those recent news clips of the people protesting with signs that say things like "GOD HATES YOU."
Hannity and Colmes interviewed their little ring leader yesterday. They asked her, "if Jesus were around right now do think he would join you on that side walk in protest." She said, "Absolutely."
