In the 70's when airline management figured out the male new-hires didn't look so good in mini-skirts.

Exactly why did all the airlines go to really conservative uniforms for their Fa's ?

Not quite sure but my guess is that they want to present certain image to general public. Like you said, the airline FA uniforms have gotten way too conservative. Pants and slacks are commonplace and the skirts that you see are at least knee-length if not longer. Sex appeal have definitely gone out the window as far as domestic FA uniforms are concerned. :(

On the other hand, the overseas carriers are a different story. FA's at likes of Virgin and BA still wear sharp-looking uniforms. However, some of the most risque FA uniforms are seen at bizjet ramps. It's not unusual to see things like low-cut blazers paired with matching miniskirts and 4-inch heels. :) I once dated this hot FA for a charter outfit and not only did she wear such uniforms (along with her coworkers) but also wore stockings and garter belts to go with it! :) (I'm not making this up. Let's just say I have personal knowledge of it! )

That being said, 90% of today's FA need to dress the part

Hey, now. She was only 28 at the time. Still well within "hottie time frame"...
