Did any of you file for unemployment while in training? At some airlines, technically, they aren't paying you.

Is that legal?

In most states you have to be actively looking for work, and will be penalized for not accepting suitable work.

And I think that FRAUD comes to mind for applying for unemployment benefits and lying on the application and weekly reports.

Are you not still "actively" looking for work if you are pursuing a job by completing the hiring process (training)?

Of Course you can be looking for work. Just look at airlines that aren't hiring.

Training is technically school.. not work. And therefore, if you are not receiving compensation - you are still legally unemployed.

Agree? Disagree?
Can I get a hell yeah?

Doesn't fly in Michigan.... no unemployment even if not being paid anything while in training... As far as MI is concerned you are employed the day you start company training and it's your problem if the company isn't paying you.

The term "employed" is not synonymous with "paid." In many states you do not need to be paid to be employed (ergo, unemployment payments are not made). Check with your state government as to how it defines unemployed.

In CA you cant collect if you are attending training, school or otherwise unable/unwilling to work. I tried.

Why would you work for an airline that won't pay you during training?

If people refused to work for these companies, they would start paying

Have some self respect

Unemployment Pay

Actually Depending On Your State, Lets Say Your Unemployment Check Is For 600 Bucks/two Weeks And Your 'job' Pays 400 Bucks/two Weeks, Unemployment Kicks In The Difference, I.e. 200/bucks. Peace.

why do people drop $7k to get a 737 type just to interview at southwest? If no one bought their type then southwest would have to change their hiring requirements. Yeah, the pay is different, but the principal is the same

Why would anyone pay $25k for a CRJ type to insure him/herself a regional job?

Got Tenn Unemployment while in training at RAH. The department of labor folks said as long as I am not being paid and actively looking for work it was all legit. And no, per diem does not count as income. The funny thing is that they still made me go through a job targeting/interview class even though they knew I was taking a new job. Just make sure that you quit taking it before you start getting paid. As far as coopervane's comment goes: I would have gone to wrok for a company that pays in training if they had actually called. I did start recieving interview invites after I finished OE.

Rent's still due on the 1st, man. How nice it must be for you.

In some states you can supplement your income with unemployment money (up to the max). For example, if you should get 350 a week on unemployment and your new employer pays you 250 a week (i.e. training pay or something), then the state will give you an extra 100 dollars.

In reality, this money is coming out of the pockets of your previous employer. It is not government money like some people think. It is unemployment insurance paid by your previous employer. The more claims they have for unemployement, the more they have to pay to the state.

In my state unemployment eligibility is dependant on why you are unemployed. If you left your last paying job by choice or were dismissed for cause you are not eligible to receive compensation. It's only available for layoffs, basically. Now, once you are eligible and are receiving compensation you could still receive compensation while in training as long as you report any earnings, however small, received while in training.

In Florida you will charged with fraudulent overpayment, be required to repay, and face a possible felony fraud charge for EACH week claimed while in (unpaid) training--the decision to charge is made by the local State's Attorney's office in your area. Personal family experience on this one. Don't do it in Florida. They will arrest you first and let you hire a lawyer to sort it out.

Having collected while in training in Illinois two years ago you can do it. It is umemployment insurance here. You still have to pay taxes on the money paid to you. Take it. Just don't get greedy and keep taking it once you get on line.
