I've been trying to find information on ultralights on the web. I've become interested in them after seeing a special on the History Channel. I don't know much about this industry, but it looks like a cool hobby. Anyone own or fly one? Do most ultralight drivers build their own, or are there manufacturers out there? I assume it's cheaper than owning a GA aircraft? What kind of rating does one have to have to pilot an unlrtralight? If anyone could point in me in the right direction, or just tell me about it, I'd appreciate it.

They're great fun and will teach you stuff about flying you may not learn in a heavier craft. I'd check out the Experimental Aircraft Association, U. S. Hanggliding Assoc., or the U.S. Ultralight Assoc. There are others but I forget.
DO NOT build your own or teach yourself to fly one if you value your health. Unless of course you're an Aerodynamic Engineer and experienced pilot then I say go for it.
There are so many types I would suggest deciding what you're interested in by surfing the net or whatever then arrange to meet a reputable instructor for an intro.
There are some flight parks in Florida that specialize in this.
I hangglide and love it. The sport has come a long, long way. The latest XC record is about 400 miles! You can launch off a hill, get yanked up by another ultralight, or have a self launch motor.
Enjoy!

Thanks for the advice and internet links.
