Airbus A380 super jumbo hit by new problems on fuselage

Sat Jul 22, 1:58 PM ET
BERLIN (AFP) - New problems have been detected on Airbus's giant A380 super jumbo jet, adding to the woes of the fledging aircraft which is already afflicted with wiring problems.

Problems with section 19 of the fuselage were detected during trial flights in Toulouse, southern France, according to an internal Airbus document, the weekly Der Spiegel reported in its edition which goes on sale Monday.

No details were given on the nature of the problem.

The European aircraft manufacturer decided in early March to reinforce section 19, the aft cone of the fuselage, Der Spiegel reported.

Deliveries of the A380, the biggest commercial aircraft in the world, have been severely delayed.

The European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company (EADS), which owns 80 percent of Airbus announced in June that deliveries would be delayed by six to seven months because of a production problem involving wiring connections.

Only nine of the aircraft would be delivered in 2007, seriously affecting the EADS's financial results.

The double-decker plane is designed to carry 555 to 840 passengers, about 35 percent more than the Boeing B747. To date, 16 airline companies have ordered 168 of the super jumbo jets.

Maybe if the tail wasn't attached to the fuselage using baguettes they'd be okay

Now that's funny!!!

I wonder how many more A380 hickups FedEx and UPS will put with before they cancel their orders and call Boeing for the new 747-800 freighter.

Seems to me....

Airbus is finally hitting rough times, so every possible thing that goes on with their a/c, corporate officers, etc is going to be newsworthy. Boeing is rocking it right now so the problem they had with the Dreamliner fuselage barrells recently quickly becomes no big deal, which it likely is. Had it happened when they were having production and QA problems or when they were questioned by the industry after the Sonic Cruiser flopped it would have been a much bigger story. It's like when an airliner crashes, so we have to listen to every story of a 172 emergency landing on a soccer field in Bumbleweed, ND for the next two weeks. I imagine this will continue until the thing flies in revenue service, and even then the every time one cancels we'll hear about for quite sometime to come. Whenever the A350XWB starts gaining orders in the next year or so as the market starts to split between the manufacturers to keep acquisition costs low, we'll start hearing that Boeing was too confident in their product. Then we can move to the 737/A320 replacement battle. Of course the way the leasing companies are leading Boeing and Airbus around by their noses lately, they'll both be bankrupt by then due to development costs!!

Didn't you hear? No more A380s! Yeah man. All those 757s and 737s are coming equipped with 4 external tanks under the wings, plus tiptanks, plus a refueling door up top! Additionally, Fred has contracted with the USAF to provide "just in time" tankers for the long haul, over the water, flights. Useful load: 1 can with just 1 letter, plus the haz can (for ballast).

By the way, NKAWTG and the numbers now will be: 200 757s and 150 737s.

I hope the Guard refuels them 'cause those guys are the best!

Yaaaahhhoooooo!

You're damn right NKAWTG...N. I'm also glad you now know the mighty fighting force that is the Air Guard... as long as I can log a two-fer.

As an aside... did you see the C-5 Dover re-creation?
