Thank you tranceport! I agree with you that a merger can't happen soon enough. It won't be good for me to start off and may even result in a furlough for a short while (I think I have about 20 below me at CAL.) But, as you state, there is just too much capacity which keeps prices down. Everyone says a merger with UAL will be "doom and gloom." Yeah it'll change the CAL corporate culture which Bethune worked so hard to build and Kehlner is keeping alive, but I don't think it'll change all that much. But even with that, rumor has it Bethune may get back in the game maybe even the helm at UAL. Merge UAL and CAL while Bethune is rocking the boat may be the best thing to happen.

Cheers

Since you work at CAL, please get an education about the history of NWAC who used to own a big part of CAL and had to sell because of anti-trust laws. Since NWAC has voting rights on any merger until the year 2022, I don't think they'll let anyone of their competitors merge with CAL. End of discussion.

Yes they did pay around 20K for their DC9 training at valujet you lyer. I never applied to SWA, and I WAS what CAL was looking for. They also paid for my B737 type rating. Later critter!!

Why don't you ask your captain at Continental about scabs. In fact judging by your experience level, I'm guessing you had some inside help at CAL. Maybe you can ask your daddy about scabs and how his company helped destroy Eastern. Have a nice day in Newark!

I am not sure a merger would reduce capacity long term. If you reduce capacity a low cost feeder just comes in and brings the capacity right back up.

That post made a lot of sense

Everyone knows there are scabs at CAL. And your point is???

By the way, my Dad isn't an airline pilot, but thanks for the stupid advice.

seahorse,

Like your avatar. Do you remember the old Captain Value commericals that Crispy Critter was running back in the day? Used to hear them when I was flying the 67 out IAD in the early 90's. I always thought that was pretty ironic to have the commerical with "Captain Value" when all of those yoyo's had paid for training to fly 30+year old DC-9's with PDI's

Did not know you were at CAL. If the merger goes down with us or another carrier wish you the best. I think you guys have thinned the scab ranks just like UAL has in the past few years. Those guys are finally getting old and leaving. In the meantime congrats on the airplane orders. At least you guys have some serious new equipment coming.

"Lyer"? Yeah, I'll bet you were what CAL was looking for . . . . when they needed to staff the lav truck.

That's not true. Why do people keep bringing that up. IT'S only someone buying CAL.

The way things seem to be going over there, a more relevant topic may be "Will there BE a United in 2010"?

.

Most people thought that about Valuejet. You're still here though.

Did your mother drop you on your head when you were little? You seem to have some residual brain damage. Don't worry, I'll go really slowly for you.

I was hired in 2001 . . . . after September 11th. Are you with me so far?

Since then, I have been a 737 Captain for a year and a half.

Still with me?

If I had worked for whatever carrier scraped you off the floor . . . err, hired you, I would have spent this time on furlough . . . . instead of being a 737 Captain . . . . . copy? If not, don't worry, find your happy place . . . . which is probably on your knees out behind the truck stop, picking up a little extra money.

Does anyone have any data that would predict the percentage of UAL pilots who will be retired (age 60) by 2010? Could you direct me where to find this if you know? Thank you!

To ATFQ:
Data is based on UAL's July '05 seniority list; there were 8915 pilots on the list including furloughees.
Pilots reaching age 60 by year:
2005 83
2006 240
2007 266
2008 237
2009 234
2010 203
2011 169
2012 231
2013 246
2014 240
2015 277
2016 332
2017 309
2018 383
2019 357
2020 463

The above data includes 2005 retirements, since the seniority list was as of 7/7/05. It also does not account for those that are on medical leave of absence; there were 193 pilots on medical leave of absence. Also, I can't tell how many are on military leave of absence; due to pay cuts, that number is likely very significant, albeit a temporary condition. I posted through 2020, when I hit age 60, because it doesn't matter (to me) after that. :)

How many total UAL pilots on furlough right now?

Of those pilots on furlough, how many that would actually go back? i.e.- not with FDX, SWA, UPS, etc.

Ha ha....737 Captain at Valuejet. Big deal. I've got 7000 hours in a 737. It's a huge step below what I fly now. Enjoy your Volkswagen.

I do enjoy my job, which is more than you can say. Anyone who needs to trumpet his "big, heavy airplane" obviously doesn't have much going on anywhere else.

Enjoy your "Heavy" , Big Guy. . . .

Really? I had 2 overnights last week. The first on the Big Island staying at the Hiltion Waikoloa Resort and the 2nd at the Marriot Resort on Kaui. You think that your overnight was better? What craphole hotel in what fabulous place did you stay at last week?

Since you've never made it to a place like United how could you possibly know what it's like here? Well...you don't. And your guess isn't too accurate. Enjoy your Volkswagen.

Well, I'll give you a hint . . . . I had two nights in West Coast city where we share the same layover hotel . . . . and your two colleagues on the hotel van were NOT nearly as happy as you about the situation at your beloved U.

I enjoy going to work . . . what's not to like? Great people, new equipment, and I mostly do 1 or 2 leg days out to long layovers on the West Coast, where I have friends and family. I also don't need to have "made it" to United. My paycheck and QOL are much better at AirTran, as hard as that is for you to fathom. Enjoy Hawaii . . . unfortunately, that will be hard to do, since you'll still be you.

As Mark Twain onc observed, "Most folks are about as happy as they decide to be", and it's pretty clear you've decided to be not happy.

Maybe you can explain to all of us how you know what it's like at United Airlines. You don't have a clue. You've never worked here. But you seem to have all of the answers. My advice to you...toss your crackpipe...you are delusional (or maybe just a tad bit slow).

When a 3rd year AirTran pilot is making more than a 7th or 8th year United pilot, it doesn't take a genius to figure out how rancid things are.

You have 6 year pilots on the street, and your most junior CA was hired 9 years ago . . . . . . . .

Be glad you still have a job (for now) and shut yer pie hole . . . . you're impressing no one.

Not trying to impress anyone. I'm glad you're convinced your job is so great. But if you really think that way why do you show such a hatred towards United? I showed a buddy your posts...chances are high that he interviewed you when you claim to have been hired. His response to your many negative posts about United, "what an embarrasment." I told him you're probably not a bad guy...just an unhappy one to show such contempt towards others. Do you hang out w/ teenagers and brag about what a big Captain you are?

I hope your life improves and you don't feel you have to brag about your pay and trips to impress us all. We all know better.

I'll shut my "pie-hole" for now. I have better things to do. Don't you?

I highly doubt that any of the people who interviewed me 5 years ago would be hanging with an a-hole like you . . . did you share the rest of your comments about our airline with them . . . or did you just make that up, like the rest of your crap?

Hvy,

Don't let that "ty" moron lower you to his level. For a guy who supposedly has the aviation world by the horns he spends alot of time on this board bashing others and pontificating. Deep down he's jealous and has no right to be a "Capatin" other than being in the right place at the right time (if you consider critter the "right" place). Real Captains wouldn't spend their time at a keyboard writing that crap. Must have too much time on his hands between those awesome west coast layovers.

Ahhh...he's probably an o.k. guy. I don't really take too much personally on here. For all I know it could be a 12 year old kid having fun on the computer. Hey...I could be a 12 year old kid.

Yawn . . . . I never said I had "the aviation world by the horns" . . . . I simply said I was happy with my lot in life.

I have no right to be a "Capatin", huh? Well, at least I can spell it . . . . and do it 16 days a month. Howsaboutyerself? Doing any Captain-ing, lately? Lazy-Boys don't count.

True, he's probably a swell guy when not hiding behind a keyboard. Gotta run...Sponge Bob is on!

Ty, grow up! I have several friends at Airtran that would be more than happy to be hired at UAL (when we start hiring again in 2007)

I am glad you are happy with Airtran, and I am HAPPY with my job ay UAL, I fly a Widebody and stay at some cool places--I have already flown a narrow body aircraft as Captain in and out of ATL several times a day--its all you baby!

I wouldn't hold my breath about hiring in 2007 . . .

According to www.airlinepilotcentral.com you have 1,497 pilots on furlough. Even if your training department ramped up to 60 a month, it would take almost two years just to get every one of the furloughees back on the line.

Of course, there will probably be a lot of those furloughees who will not come back, if they are happier at AirTran and some of the other airlines they have gone to.

It will be interesting to see how many of your UAl brothers at AirTran feel as you do. My hunch is those who have made "Captain of a narrowbody flying into and out of ATL" will stay. . . . I guess we shall see.

Of course, since we are in contract negotiations, I hope we do have people leaving to go elsewhere. Nothing speaks louder than voting with your feet.

Two Dudes at Airtran that I know of are coming back to UAL. But who cares? You are the one who has a hard on for UAL. I could care less about Airtran (or "Da Tranny" as some call it) I want to fly Intl and UAL allows me to do that I also have 25+ years to go at UAL and I am sure that things will change for the better at UAL. Time will tell.
