2) don't know, but generally ORD is junior and DEN is senior. The rest fall in-between depending upon fleet and seat.

Right now, I think the most senior bases are JFK and SEA. That'd be due to them being small bases without any vacancies for quite a while.

Currently, IAD's been going to a lot of recallees due to the UAL expansion taking place in that domicile.

I think that you'll find traditionally, ORD and SFO tend to be the most junior. And of course whatever domicile you'd like to go to will be the most senior. :D

Pre-911, my goal in life was to be based out of MIA, which was the most senior domicile in the system at the time.

What are United's domiciles & what equipment are in each. Additionally - as a new hire, what is the seat/equipment lock if any? Also, how many hours can you expect to be paid to start. Just the minimums or are you guys crediting 90 +.

thanks

ORD - everything
IAD - everything
DEN - -300, 320, 57/67
LAX - 320, 57/67, 777, 400
SFO - 320, 57/67, 777, 400
SEA - -300, 57/67, 777
JFK - 320, 57/67

Seat lock would be 36 months. Reserve guarantee is 70 hours. Most reserves credit more than that. If you're on reserve and pick up aggressively, you can get 90.

How do domicile transfer bids at United work? Annually? As needed?
Thanks.

I'll assume that you're referring to a 'lateral.' As in lateral transfer to a different domicile on the same equipment.
As D Bo pointed out, there's a 36 month seat lock. This seat lock is for equipment. There are a few ways to train on new equipment during those 36 months, but they're not the normal way that people change equipment, so let's just say that you will be able to get on different equipment once your seat lock is up.

As far as equipment bids go, they're pretty much monthly. Here's the current vacancy bids, which should close on the 20th of this month for December training (I'm hoping that the formatting works out):
CAPTAIN 400 CAP LAX 12

777 CAP SFO 8
SEA 3

767 CAP DEN 2
SFO 6
SEA 4

320 CAP DCA 8
DEN 7

300 CAP DCA 2
ORD 8

TTL 60
FIRST OFFICER 400 F/O LAX 12 777 F/O SFO 15 767 F/O DCA 8 DEN 4 LAX 2 320 F/O DCA 10 LAX 2 TTL 53 TOTAL CAP VACANCIES: 60 TOTAL F/O VACANCIES: 53 TOTAL VACANCIES: 113

For United, the bids are monthly right now due to all of the retirements. They came out monthly from the time I was hired in June 2000 until after 9/11. The bids have been smaller and sporadic over the last few years, but now it's back to monthly for at least the last year.

Now, to get to your original question on laterals. I'll use myself as an example of what not to do.
In order to bid for a new position or domicile, you have to fill out a BIDREQ sheet on Unimatic (ancient computer system currently used by United). When a vacancy bid comes out, the computer goes through the seniority list filling vacancies.
In my case, I had a bunch of equipment and domiciles in my BIDREQ screen before being furloughed - I was on the A320 out of LAX when furloughed. In spite of being furloughed and recalled, they did NOT clear my BIDREQ screen (DOH!).
When I returned from furlough (well, I'm on mil leave until 2009, but return to UAL on paper), I got a 767 to IAD. That works well, since I'm on military orders in the DC area. Unfortunately, I had a 767 to LAX on my BIDREQ screen. So, as you can guess, I got awarded a 767 to LAX back in Feb for a June date. So if I were active, I'd have lateraled from IAD to LAX in June. I now have a 767 to IAD in my BIDREQ screen and I expect to be awarded that before I return to UAL, since I won't be returning for quite a while.

Long winded answer, but hopefully that illustrates the process fairly well.

I gotta say, it's nice to get questions about United rather than reading the standard slams on the company. Good luck to all of those that want to fly for United, and good luck to those that don't. Let's hope that we can all work for the company that's a good fit for each of us.

It appears that there are no vacancies on the 75 and the -300 plus no vacancies in ORD as far as Fo goes, just a mistake or....?
What are the Company needs for the new hires? what would be the most educated guess in the regards of acft and domicile assignments? How long reserve will be?

Thanks.

P.M.: Andy check your P.M. inbox if you can, I sent you a couple of mess. Thanks.

767 bids include the 757!

You fly both airplanes.....

Sorry, I thought that I had responded to you; I've gotten several people PMing me about hiring.
I deleted out a bunch of PMs recently to keep my inbox open; I must've deleted everything recent to you.

My advice to you and everyone else that's debating on whether or not they're competitive is to apply as soon as qualified. The reason for this is that UAL (and most other airlines) will hire across an entire spectrum; low time, high time, young, older. They are not looking for one specific type of pilot. So if you get a call for an interview, you have just as good a shot of getting hired as anyone else.

What are the percentages for the contractual raises in 08, 09, and 10? Thanks

Hi!

Re: UAL hiring...from another web site:

...word around the DEN training center (called "TK" by UA peeps) is that there were only 600 apps after the first 3 days - they were expecting 3000+.

Here's a little help.

737-300 is known as the "Three hundred" or "Guppy"

A319/A320 are known as "The Bus"

757/767 are known as the "Seven Five" or "Seven Six" some prefer to drop the first seven and call them "Fifty Seven" or "Sixty Seven"

777 pretty easy "Triple Seven"

747-400 = "The Four Hundred" or "Whale"

You might want to learn these while you are networking for your job at UAL :D

How's life treating you bro at SWA?? Haven't heard from you in a while on here?

WD.

You just revealed confidential information......trade secrets!

It's the Airbus A-300. United found a bunch of surplus 300's from the old Varig that are being used for all the international growth. They are junior because many at United would rather fly the B777 overseas. They are especially junior in DEN because pilots don't trust the single-engine performance data on high density altitude days.

Hope this helps.

Uh huh...that's right. A-300, non-stop Denver to Bangkok....lose an engine, fuggedaboudit.

For those guys looking for pay info try: airlinepilotcentral.com, then legacy, then United

I don't think UAL pays for your room during initial training (they didn't when I hired on in 97).

I think new hire pay rates apply depending on what plane you are on (I THINK).
