UAL 3Q Profit Climbs
Tuesday October 23, 9:37 am ET
By Ashley M. Heher, AP Business Writer United Airlines Parent UAL's 3Q Earnings Climb 76 Pct on Lower Costs, Higher Passenger Revenue

CHICAGO (AP) -- UAL Corp. said Tuesday its third-quarter profit surged nearly 76 percent, a better-than-expected performance due largely to pared-down costs, reduced capacity and a boost in passenger revenue at United Airlines.

It was the company's most profitable quarter in seven years, beating a record set during the previous quarter.
The parent of the nation's No. 2 carrier said it earned $334 million, or $2.21 per share, for the July-through-September quarter. That's up from $190 million, or $1.30 per share, during the same period last year.
Excluding special items, many of which were related to the company's emergence from federal bankruptcy protection last year, the company earned $295 million, or $1.96 per share, easily beating Wall Street forecasts.
Meanwhile, revenue for the Chicago-based company climbed 6.8 percent to $5.53 billion, up from $5.18 billion.
On average, analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial forecast earnings of $1.88 a share on revenue of $5.36 billion.
UAL shares rose 22 cents to $48.35 in morning trading Tuesday.
"We delivered excellent results this quarter driven by fundamental improvements across our core business," Chairman and Chief Executive Glenn Tilton told employees in a prepared statement. "Building on the momentum from our second quarter results, its clear our focus on strengthening United is working."
United said its passenger revenue per available seat mile, a key revenue measure of the amount the airline makes for each seat flown, grew 8.9 percent. Total passenger revenue on mainline flights, or that from flights not counting its regional United Express operations, climbed 7.6 percent.
Since emerging from bankruptcy in February 2006, United has restructured to trim costs and reduce domestic flight capacity -- making existing flights more crowded.

I can't wait to get my $42.00 "success sharing" check! What will I do w/ all of the extra cash?

I think your post is confusing our small "success sharing" checks with what will be a much larger "profit sharing" paid to us in the first few months of '08. Unless your posting about success sharing on an UAL earnings thread is just coincidental.

please tell me you UAL pilots at least put snapbacks in your concessionary contract.

The original concessionary contract prior to BK included a phased return to the C2K wages. Unfortunately in BK, the prospect of "snapback wages" was a "non-starter". Trust me on this though, 2009 will be a very "interesting" period at UAL. I don't think anyone (outside the UAL pilot group) understands just how agree the rank and file are. UAL will do it's part to restore wages to where they should be...maybe AMR will do their part for once.

"Much Larger"? What is your definition of "much larger"? And yes, I do understand the difference between the two. I doubt that we will be very impressed with what we get.

Snapback got eliminated in BK but the massive paycuts did not. Seems one sided to me. That pisses me off and I'm not a United pilot. It's been 4-5 years now. They should at least throw you a bone. Who cares about profit sharing of a couple grand when they are taking that or more from you every month? Not to mention what you've lost in quality of life.

My definition of "much larger" is just that- much larger. Read the side letter of your current contract (LOA 05-02 Exhibit C) that describes the PROFIT SHARING aspect of your pay, not the SUCCESS SHARING. Based on the financial results of the company so far, there are several hundred million dollars of eligible dollars for profit sharing (read the OCT 23 NEWSREEL). My very rough, back of the envelope calculation shows the average UAL pilot getting a few thousand dollars to several thousand dollars to possibly more than that *if* (and that is an IF) we continue to not lose our ass like we usually do. It's not as good as CAL's profit sharing, but if you're not impressed with the amount on the check you probably will receive, feel free to sign it over to me :)

Make sure you are on the ALPA e-mail list. Have a Happy Thanksgiving. Make sure you find your hat.

It pisses me off that our wages were massively undercut in the first place by airlines that paid less than industry standard wages with little or no retirement, such as a pension plan, in the late 90's and early 00's. Further, it pisses me off that even if we get anything resembling our old wages back, we'll be undercut again by the usual suspects. That's the way it goes, I guess. Walking around pissed off all the time is no way to live. Oh well.

My point is....3 thousand....5 thousand...still less than I gave up EVERY MONTH. Sure, I'll take it and spend it. But it won't be enough to make me "happy". As far as my hat....it's on. Let's see if we can get some unity flowing for the holidays.

Yup, you're absolutely right on that point. FYI, someone posted a spreadsheet on our ALPA forum that has some rough estimates based upon one's earnings for the year and the company's net profit if you want to take a wag at what you might expect, assuming the usual show-stoppers don't occur between now and DEC 31.

Talk it up with the guys you fly with about the unity you mention......but it sounds like you don't need a reminder :)
