I don't agree with your thesis. It sounds harmless enough, you're probably at least partially correct. But memos like this too often are what precede announcements of parking mainline airplanes. Mgt floats something like this first so the Stockholm Syndrom sufferers have something to cling to while they shout down the rest of us. It too often causes us all not to react. We can't afford that mistake anymore. How many mainline airplanes have to be parked before we become proactive?

If you work for United, log onto the employee website and click on the Q&A where it states that 50% of the domestic reduction will be at the Regional level. ...if they increase international flying 3.5% that means they are moving domestic mainline aircraft to adjust for that ...probably making up the rest of the 50% domestic reduction....bluechunks is spot on.

50 seaters have a HUGE bulls eye on them.

As a result of the capacity changes, for the full year 2011, we will reduce our domestic capacity
by 1.5 to 2.5 percent compared with 2010, while increasing 2011 international capacity by 2.5 to
3.5 percent compared with last year. So for the full year 2011, our consolidated capacity will be
about flat with what it was for 2010,
rather than growing the 1 to 2 percent that we planned for
the year.
So, the new United will fly the same amount as they did last year:rolleyes:

How is it then that Skywest xjt, et al are hiring and upgrading like crazy and deutsche bank just upgraded skyw to buy based on record profits if ual is going to eliminate flying? What's missing? IMO, smisek is telling ual folks what they want to hear-that will give him another 10-12 months to keep the pilots at bay. Then, he'll craft yet another story.

What airline do you work for?! What are you talking about?! There are about 600 guys over 60 at CAL alone. And yes, most of the training department is over 60.

Read what he said the "entire training dept over 60" (Not)

Second you are absolutely correct: I jumped to the over age 60 pilots who were in training dept, and in CPO who were over age and got "Grandfathered" there are only Approx 20 of them. "My bad" Of course we have many over sixty at this time.

You gummers need to find another line of work. The greatest generation is sucking this country dry.

Don't bring down the one of the greatest generation of people that this country has ever seen.

Most of these older pilots are from the baby boomer generation. The Baby boomer generation starting arriving in 1945-1946. This generation has taken everything this country has had to offer and given very little in return.

They have paid less taxes then any generation before them. They have had higher salary increases then any generation before them. They have had there home values explode higher. They have enjoyed the relative stability of the 1980 and 1990.

What did they give back... We went from having on of the smallest national debts to what we have now (they didn't want to pay taxes). They are not retiring like the previous generations (no jobs for their kids). They have not saved for retirement (so their kids will have to support them). They have created the lowest cost no matter the cost to get that low cost. They have created outsourcing. They have created the worst economic collapse since the great depression. They have spent more tax revenue on sports teams then needed infrastructure.

The list could go on for a while. From the greatest generation to the worst generation!

Things change, nice to see some "regionals" starting to sweat!!! This may start a whole new war!! Maybe Smisek realizes scope is a battle that will bring down the airline, who knows! New plan will probably involve a trading ratio of 50 for 70 seaters.

This would be a reasonable arguement but skywest like most of the regional carriers fly for multiple company's, so you can't really get a feel for them just because one company says they are going to scale back a bit.

Since SKYW now owns COEX there should be a good mix of both 50 and 70 seat aircraft being reduced.
