Just wondering if any of you UA guys have any scoop on how soon hiring might begin again. I heard something from a jumpseater about a bid with new upgrades, but he didn't know much about any new hiring. Would that bid require new hires too, or just a heavier schedule for who is already there? Also he said whispers/rumors of a possible Narita domicile for added Pacific stuff.

I'll try to post some of the bid info here. One nice bright spot was B767 Capt SFO went to a 1995 hire! I expect UAL to be through the list sometime in early 2007, then guys/gals must make a decision if they bypassed. The rumor is late 2007 hiring. I think we had some 20+ unfilled A320 DCA slots, and maybe something like 40+ system wide 737-300 unfilled F/O slots, so they will need to recall many more pilots just to cover that and not too mention the backfill.

I am sure Andy has the info handy, I gotta fly to OGG.

Great news! Do you know what the minimums will be for times?

To some degree it will. But I'm sure they must have some minimum hour requirement. After that it is how you shine in the interview that matters the most.

Yeah, when you get the internal rec then maybe you'll get the chance to interview and then subsequently-shine.

I have no inside information, but I would be very surprised if we started hiring off the street anytime soon- and I doubt 2007. It's true that we'll probably burn one time through the recall list in early '07 just to get a few hundred guys back, but I think the second pass through will see many guys actually take the recall. If they bypass this second time through the list, they have to resign their UAL seniority number. It was easy (and smart) for many guys to just say "no" the first time through with a "wait-and-see" attitude at whatever job they have now, but I bet we're going to see a higher percentage of guys come back when they get the take it or leave it phone call during this second pass through the list in early '07. I've been reading and hearing that many are saying we'll have street hires in '07 or '08. As much as I would like to see that, I don't think it's going to happen.

I wonder how much an ex-military background helps at UAL?

I just called my management contacts at UAL. Here is what I was told. UAL will "stay the course" and continue the hiring practices of old. The most important things my contacts told me to tell prospective pilots was

1. If you are a male, consider a surgery called a "chopadickoffame."

2. If you are white, consider getting a "package deal" down at the local tanning salon.

If followed to the "T", both of these will move you to the top of the stack.

Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa haaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!

I am crying a little between each fit of laughter because frank is probably correct.

Minimum Requirements:

- 300 hours TT

- Phallicaly Challenged

- Melanin levels exceeding that of European Americans

- Familiarity with engine out procedures / SFO / OAK

You guys are killin' me . . . . . .

How about:

- Breastages requiring elasticized undergarment support

Ah, the ignorance never ceases. walk into any United pilots ops and you are going to see 95% white males who look like they used to be Air Force/Navy/Marines.

Well...let's see....I'm a white male and I got hired. The overwhelming majority of pilots I fly with are white males. I had no recommendations. Sounds to me like your package just didn't quite "measure up?"

By the way....most (not all) of the women I have flown w/ have been very competant and had prior military experience. There are of course exceptions. Most of the jerks I have flown with have in fact been white males. Your "unqualified" females (and yes there were some) were hired in such low numbers I'm sure that it would not have made much of a difference in you getting hired anyways. But if it makes you feel better you go right ahead and think it. Perhaps you could make better use of your time by being positive and not blaming your failures on others?

Sounds like an Airtran Interview to me.

yet another blast from the past.....

Big talk from a little commuter boy wishing his "flow agreement" with USAir will work out soon.

When I was at ASA in the nineties, I had a hobby - using an old seniority list, I would highlight anybody that left the company, and when possible would write down where they went.

In four years, not one white male that wasn't a son or daughter went to UAL. But we sent ~15 there who were either sons/daughters, ex interns or minorities. At the same time we were filling up classes at DAL, NWA and even sent some to AA.

So yeah, I hear you, stay positive, worry about yourself not others, etc. But UAL's past practices were shameful and insulting - I spent 9 years sending in scantrons. I even had an uncle flying there the whole time.

I know personally a guy who went to UAL with 1200 TT, his biggest claim to fame being right seat in the Brasilia. But his dad was from India, so that made him Asian....

Even worse. (!)

Also, I'm curious as to exactly how someone who was in the Armed Services "looks"?

Do they wear spandex Super-Hero briefs like Batman or what?

I've got an idea! Why don't you walk into your flight Ops and scream that question out? You'll make some new friends.

UAL's practices were dictated by the outcome of a federal lawsuit. Perhaps your disgust is misguided. Even so, relatively few were hired.

We pride ourselves as professionals...yet a large number of our ranks come on anonymous message boards and act like babies.

HVY,

My post contained two questions...Which one am I supposed to ask in Ops?

I'm still confused. Do all former members of the Armed Services have some distinct "look" about them as alluded to in the previous post by one of your distinguished colleagues?

I guess it's similar to when my friend is told "funny, you dont look Jewish" he always replys: "Really? How are Jewish people supposed to look?"

So tell me, just HOW do these Service Men and Women look?

Do they have a "steely eyed" stare? A bold square chin?

Maybe the Batman pants would make them more easily identifiable...(?)

Now back to the original topic...

The word my class got from WHQ back in Oct. was that the company is preparing for the possibility of needing new hires by late 2007. This, of course depends on the percentage of furloughees who finally do decide to come back. If the recall acceptance rate remains low as they progress back up the seniority list, we were told to expect some form of application (probably online) to be available around mid-2007 with interviews to follow next September/October for November/December classes. Of course all of this is subject to change in a moment's notice!

Cheers!

No shot at Hvy, but I have heard that so many times in the past few years that I really wonder if it is real or urban legend.

Lets remember that we all work in a "monkey see, monkey doo" industry. Meaning thatif one carrier does it...the others follow suit. Also, if this federal lawsuit was successful, then why weren't other filed at competeing carriers? Why didn't the competitors chenge their hiring minimums when they saw what happened to UAL on this?

Somehow, things don't match up.

I do agree with Hvy that no matter what the minimums are, very few ( if any) pilots are hired with those numbers at any airline.

History behind UAL's hiring practice

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong on the details. Sometime during the 80's UAL was sued by the EEOC for refusing to hire minorities/women. As part of the settlement UAL agreed to take a certain amount of minorities/women who were previously turned down due to their race/sex and disperse them in the seniority list. Furthermore UAL was told that the percentage of minority newhires must be EQUAL or greater to the percentage of minorities that apply. So if 5 percent of all applicants are minoity/females then 5 percent of newhires must be minority/female.

Several years later UAL was AGAIN sued by the EEOC for failing to live up to the prior agreement. Apparently UAL was still not hiring minorities and females in any significant number. Big fine. New agreement was that UAL's percentage of newhire minorities/women would have to be TWICE the percentage that applied. So if five percent of your applicants are minority/female then at least 10 percent of your newhires must be minority/female. So as a result of failing to abide by the first settlement UAL was forced to hire a dispraportionately large percentage of minorities/women to appease the EEOC. Since there weren't thousands of overqualified minority/female pilots in the late 80's/90's we ended up with the situation that has been beeten to death on flightinfo and cockpits across the country.

That's the story I heard, maybe some senior UAL fellow could correct me if I'm wrong. Otherwise lets all give it a long overdue rest.....

I put people who have to continue the myth of United pilots being a bunch of minorities who can't fly into 2 categories - first the guy who never got an interview or got turned down. I always wanted to work for Delta but never got an interview. That's the way it works. I moved on. Second, and even more pathetic, is the guy who is just latching onto some way to feel superior. "You're pilot group is stinky, me better than you!"

Whine Lover, I have to wonder if you are a pilot. After you have been doing this job a while, you can walk into a room of pilots and guess fairly accurately the backgrounds of everybody. I'm not saying military pilots are better, that is always a ridiculous argument. I'm saying that United gets most of their pilots from the same place everyone else does. If you go into United ops in ORD right now looking for all the women and minorities, you are going to be disappointed.

I'm still confused. Do all former members of the Armed Services have some distinct "look" about them as alluded to in the previous post by one of your distinguished colleagues?

Yes. Be more observant. Distinguished colleague? Maybe, I don't work for United.
