Back when UAL operated the 737-200, were their pilots cross trained on the 300 (and 500) or were they considered separate fleets?

Separate type rating, so...
No seperate type. A 737 type allows one to fly the 737adv, 737 classic and 737NG. Just differences training.
I'm typed and flown all three series!

True. I got typed on the -200, but most of my hours are on the NG without another type ride.
