Strange story-

Nice to know that UA spent so much money to hire the "right" people.

Before anybody starts flaming me let me say that I know there are crackheads at every airline, even mine. It just goes to show that even if an airline spends a lot of money on screening a pilot candidate doesn't guarantee success. Geez, they hired me once upon a time!

Cheers!

Must have been a TSA employee that turned him in. (or an ex-wife:D reminds me of that Sam Kinison bit on "Sir Step away from the luggage rack")

It's not the terrorists that frighten me so much as lunatics like this guy. It would be nice to say this is only an isolated incident, but there was Terry Nichols, Tim McViegh, and that nut-fricken' job at FedEx that nearly destroyed a company by himself. Thank goodness for the crew!

Hopefully they'll be able to send this guy away for a looooooong time.

That's assuming you buy her story.

She only waited 2 years to come out with it.

What's that they say about a woman scorned?

While he sounds like a hothead, I doubt very seriously his "threat" was nothing more than a tantrum about his own finances. I'll bet that he somehow angered this woman, who is probably an ex-wife or girlfriend (the FBI conveniently left out that relationship) and she decided to get back at him by dropping a dime on him.

Quite the conclusion you draw from the first round of a news story. Now go back and worship at the shrine you have set up to Joe McCarthy.

Does this mean we have to curtail our wisecracks, too?
This is the only fun place I have in my life!

Yeah, I'll get right on that. Thanks so much for setting me straight. Such an appropriate analogy too! I can really see the simialarities between a Wisconsin Congressman who lost all common sense in a witch hunt for communists, and an airline pilot who is concerned by domestic nut-jobs and doesn't want to share the national airspace system with a hot-headed liar who submited false paperwork to the DoD concerning his security clearance. Maybe you could start a legal defense fund for this guy, obviously it's all the woman's fault.

LRJDRVR,

You might want to read the story of Joe McCarthy as written, and proven, by someone other than the liberal media.

Hollywood's rendition is just not correct.

There was also the PSA/USAir BAE-146 brought down by a disgruntled ex-employee who shot the flight crew inflight...

This is nuts.....

Just want to make sure I understand you right. You have more fear of some guy who never did anything except freak out some bimbo two years ago than you do of the a$$wipes who murdered at least 8 pilots and 6 flight attendants specifically and 3000 more incidentally.

this is your position? Glad to see you have a clue.

We are in more trouble than I thought

What concerns me is the question on the application that says, "were you ever arrested?" Look folks, as Americans we are innocent until proven guilty. According to this man's record the charges were dismissed, which means either the solicitor felt that there was no evidence, or reason, to proceed in his case. Police make mistakes every day ( like any other profession ). Being arrested is not a crime and should not be treated as such.

If Police have the power of summary judgement - why do we have the Courts, Civil Procedure and our Constitution?

You are a self described "human factors" nerd and you are making these sorts of judgements? There are two sides to every story and we have only heard one version from a news network with a somewhat hysterical perspective. I happen to think your comment is wrong, and the pilot would surely feel threatened by your hope that he be "sent up the river for a long time."

Should you also be sent up the river for "Public Disorder" (aka speech that causes another to fear for their safety ) or misdemeanor assault?

I don't think so. We all make stupid statements at times. There is a difference between calling your airline and telling them there is a "bomb on board" and telling some lady at a party that "I've got a rocket in my pocket." What about the jokes I have made about crashing airplanes when I do a lousy landing, or my statements to first officers asking them to keep me out of the weeds at unfamiliar airports? If you are going to "send him up the river for a looooong" time, most of us would have to join him and I bet there is a seat for you on that boat.

Robert Feneziani (search), 44, of San Diego, was arrested Wednesday by FBI agents with the Joint Terrorism Task Force of Western New York (search) and charged with lying on a military application for a security clearance. He pleaded not guilty and was released on $10,000 bail.

According to an FBI agent's affidavit, the woman, whose identity was not revealed in court papers, called the FBI Feb. 2 and told the agent Feneziani had made a threat in 2003 to crash a plane.

Lets not "send him up the river" until the facts are developed. If the FBI thought for an instance this guy was a real terrorist threat they would not have failed to charge him and he would not be free on $10,000 bail.

Remember, this is NOT a job application. It is a security clearance application, and no one has a "right" to a security clearance. Our nations secrets need and deserve the upmost protection. Those who serve in the military voluntarily live in a police state so the rest of us don't have to.

Please don't apply to Southwest. They're looking for good judgement, and you sir, have NONE.

STUPID THING TO SAY, You had several opportunities to change your tune and say something else, like:

The terrorists are a bunch of disgusting worthless animals, but I fear the individual whack-o's too.

ANYTHING, other than apparant symapathy for the terrorists. It may not have been what you meant, but others read it that way, and called you out on it.

You don't work for SOUTHWEST...
You dont work for SOUTHWEST...
You don't work for SOUTHWEST....

so...quit trying to pretend you do. You are not their spokesman and you cannot possibly make assumptions about their hiring decisions.

Man, you said a mouthful. A number of years ago a person I like to call my ex-wife, had a pfa (protection from abuse) filed against me. They are issued without ANY proof of said abuse. I understand fully their purpose, and have no problem with this legal instrument. However, as a plaintiff completely innocent of wrongdoing, I resented it's issuance. A judge agreed with me, and had it rescinded. The Biatch just wanted to make certain I didn't catch her boyfriend in MY house, and thought she would use the law to her advantage. Once removed, I politely informed her that if I caught said boyfriend on MY property, HE would be the one filing a PFA against me. From the ICU.

Point being, as the quoted post illustrates, anyone (even a nice guy like me) can be charged with an offense, or arrested, without just cause.
Even though I have been lucky, and can honestly check the NO box, when asked "have you ever been arrested"...., I always felt it was unconstitutional.
The question asking whether you have been CONVICTED of a felony, now that is both fair and reasonable.

My feeling about this poor UAL pilot's pilot's plight ? Like me, he needs to exercise better judgement when.......

Comparison shopping the opposite gender .
