Woman Electrocuted, Dies While Walking Dogs
Exact Cause Of Death Unknown

POSTED: 1:20 am EST January 17, 2004

NEW YORK -- A woman died in East Village Friday night when she was electrocuted while walking her dog.

Con Ed officials said exposed wires had energized a metal grate on East 11th Street near First Avenue. She was walking her two dogs when the animals received a shock.

Witnesses described a chaotic and confusing scene.

"The lady was saying, 'Somebody help me to get them away,' because there was a brown dog, and it was biting another dog," a witness said.

The dogs were agitated -- one biting the other -- so Lane moved forward to separate them, and soon the dogs and the woman were on the ground, injured.

"The lady was on the floor, and I don't know exactly what happened to her, but then I saw a lady go up to her, and she was off the curb in the street," the witness said.

Electrocution was first suspected when the woman was being taken to Beth Israel.

The woman was identified by police as Jodie Lane. The medical examiner was to determine the cause of her death, according to Detective Cheryl Crispin, a police department spokeswoman.

The dogs are in good condition and are being cared for by a neighbor.

A Con Ed worker on the scene said the amount of voltage in the grate wasn't lethal, so the exact cause of death won't be official until the medical examiner's report is complete.

This story highlights the problem with owning a dog; they are too high maintenance, and having to take them out for a walk is just one out of a myriad of doggy needs.

Had this lady owned a cat, she'd still be alive today.
