Hello all,
Heard that World is giving most of the MD11 type ride for new hire FOs from the right seat now.
Anyone know any other carriers that do this? Thanks.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. What I meant was that the majority of the tasks required for the type rating are demonstrated from the right seat. Any thing you can't do from the right you do from the left(like taxi). No tiller on the right.

Tillers?

I think that MD-11s and B747-400 have tillers on both sides. Maybe others also?

The tiller on the right side is not the norm for an aircraft that was originally destined for a US carrier. I know of no MD11's that have dual tillers that were delivered to any US carriers. The B747 is a different animal and the right side tiller is the normal configuration for all of these aircraft I believe.

It would eliminate the need for a further right seat checkout. Just do the taxiing, the abort and jump in the right seat.TC

Type from the right seat

All First Officers over at Independence are being typed in the A320 from the right seat.

For my MD-11 type ride, did everything required, preflight, checklists, mel problems, and everthing flyingwise, from the right seat, hopped over to the left, did a rejected takeoff, and taxied back to the ramp...and I've never seen a tiller on the f/o's side in Fedex MD-11's.

Why are they typing the FOs at Independence?

It must have made sense to someone, somewhere when we had long-term plans. When most of the training goes in house (by late summer) the practice will likely stop. Unfortunately we'll probably liquidate before that happens.
