Is it legal for two airplanes to occupy the runway at the same time? I seem to remember hearing some time ago, that it was legal if there was 5000ft of separation, but the was long before the recent push to stop runway incursions.

for small aircraft I have heard 3000 feet is ok. As a matter of fact it happened this way today so At CMI 3000 feet is ok...dunno the regs about it tho

According to Order 7110.65N, para 3-10-3, a second aircraft may be cleared to land even though the preceding aircraft has not cleared the runway IF the separation is at least:

3000 feet if it involves a Category I behind a Category II
4500 feet if it involves a Category II behind a Category I or II
6000 feet if a Cetegory III is involved in any way.

Genrally speaking, light singles are Category I, twins through a Cessna 414 are Category II, and jets are Category III. See Appendix A of the same reference for specific aircraft.

Thanks Ya'll,

I know that it's sort of useless info :), I mean we can't clear ourselves to land, but it's nice to know the exact number.

Thanks again,
enigma

Category 1: small weight class (less than 12,500lbs) that are single engine and prop driven, includes helicopter

Category 2: aircraft of the small weight class that are multi-engine and prop driven

Category 3: all other aircraft

Cleared to land...

The other day, landing a Kingair 200 behind a P-2V tanker, I was cleared to land #2 with the P-2 still on the runway.. we were simulating a single engine approach, then were told to waveoff at 200 feet AGL (the Neptune was at the end of the runway-10,000 feet from where we were--he didn't make turnoff fast enough). The airport was Moses Lake, WA.

Seems like they wave you off if you aren't the only one on the runway. Anyone here landed with another airplane on the runway (Blue Angels and Thunderbirds withstanding)?

Yea, that was one of the reasons I posted the original question. At DIA about six months ago. The previous airplane landed long (it was late in the evening) and we touched down as he was turning off the other end. I imagine that we had 9000ft of separation, but he was not clear. It was my FO's leg, the tower said "go around" just as the mains touched and the auto spoilers deployed. She must have realized she was too late, because she immediately followed with "disregard". Good thing she did, because I was not going around from the ground. The FO was good, but I don't do touch and goes in anything bigger than a 182.
