I thought there was a reg that stated the pilot of a turbojet aircraft was responsible for flying the airplane withing class B while within the lateral boundries. I haven't read the part 91 regs for a couple years now, so I might be mistaken. When I looked this up today all I could find was:

§ 91.131 Operations in Class B airspace.

(2) Unless otherwise authorized by ATC, each person operating a large turbine engine-powered airplane to or from a primary airport for which a Class B airspace area is designated must operate at or above the designated floors of the Class B airspace area while within the lateral limits of that area.

Is this the only reference to operating a turbojet in class B? The reason I ask, is I was flying the CL-65 into a class B airport. When I realized we were going to fly under the airspace I asked for higher so we could maintain 250kts. The controller gave us higher, but later assigned us an altitude below the class B.

Good question

That's a good question.....and this isn't an answer, just an observation.

I don' t know of any other regulations pertaining to this. However, from being in similar situations, I have noticed the controller always states that the assigned altitude would cause us to descend below the Class B airspace. On some occasions, the controller has given the clearance to descend and then cancelled it when he realized that we would be leaving Class B.

That was the observation the captain I was flying with had. He said, whenever he was flying in SEA airspace, the controllers would tell him he was exiting the airspace. The controller in this particular instance gave us the descent clearance right before we entered the lateral boundries of the class B. It was almost as if he wanted to keep us below that shelf. Most likely he was keeping us below other arrivals.

Cesna Captn:

Great observation of the regs. That is something I've never noticed before, and I'm sure many pilots are unaware of this as well. I would also suspect that many Controllers are unaware of this too.

Recently on a flight into PHX, we were cleared for the visual about 20 miles out. We started decending, maybe a bit early, and were asked by ATC, "Please maintain at least 4000' in that area to remain within the Class B airspace." I had never heard that before, but it made sense to do that. It is something I've become more conscience of ever since.

They're also trying to gently remind you that if you descend below the Class B you will have to be slowed below 200 KIAS . . .
