Does anyone know of any companys (freight or otherwise) that are hiring into the left seat of any turbine equipment? I have just over 1200 total with 900 multi. My goal is to work for Southwest so I thought maybe I'd be able to get the 1000 Turbine PIC with a cargo outfit or the like sooner than if I went to a regional and had to wait a couple years for an upgrade. One other question - is 1000 turbine PIC single engine (Caravan, Pilatus, etc.) acceptable to SWA? Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Let me get this straight. You want turbine PIC time with total time at 1200? A little optimistic......................don't you think. Start off with turbine SIC time first and then start thinking about turbine PIC.

The only way I know of getting turbine PIC with the hours you have is to "be all you can be" or buy a King Air.

Are you not paying attention to this board or the industry in general? 1200tt and you expect a job that will lead you to the "dream" job at SWA. Get real. A lot of good pilots are on the street but some how you will part the sea! Good luck and grow up-

Try this...

Single engine turbine

In your situation, single-engine turbine might not be a bad idea. Normally, I push multi PIC over single-engine turbine, but you have good multi time.

I have a friend who worked for Westair, whom I believe is a FedEx contractor in the Bakersfield area. He had very high total time and enough multi to get by, but no turbine to speak of. He worked there a year, built up 800 hours of Caravan time, and got hired by EJA. He said the place treated him relatively fairly and did not get surly with him if the weather or equipment weren't right. He also liked getting all the Southern California single-pilot IFR experience. Sorry, I don't have any contact info.

I haven't the foggiest if single-engine turbine PIC makes you less desirable for SWA. I believe that all they've ever cared about was the 1000 hours (and the 737 type, of course).

I think you may be on to something, bearing in mind, of course, that there are tons of furloughees and others who are several steps ahead of you in the quest for the Southwest job.

Good luck with your plans.

propilot and bobbysamd,

Thanks very much for the replies. Exactly the kind of info I was looking for. Not sure if anyone hires into the Caravans with time as low as mine or not but I thought it was worth doing some research. Thanks again!

want2fly,

There are in fact some companies that will hire you with your time. You just have to have a resume with them whenever they happen to be hiring. For example, the charter company I fly for also flys Caravans on contract for UPS and typically we like to hire pilots with 1200-2000 TT, previous instructor time, and I don't think multi is really an issue. Unfortunately, we are not hiring right now. The point being is yes there are companies that will hire you with your time into something like a Caravan. And like someone else said Airnet has Caravans now too and I think they like to hire current instructors with "lower" time.

Good luck and get those resumes out!

Want2fly,

There are plenty of places to get turbine PIC time, now like people were saying, it very well may be Caravan time which is good enough for SWA. I heard they hire guys with no turbine multi time as long as they had 1000 turbine PIC - the fact the turbine time is in Caravan seems to be OK with them.

The company in SoCal people are talking about is called West Air, callsign Pac Valley, and they are based out of Fresno with domiciles in ONT, FAT, and I think LAS, but don't quote me on Vegas. I'm not sure if they're hiring right now.

The place you want to start looking for Caravan jobs is on http://www.caravanpilots.com

You can browse through their message board, and find links to places. If you are flexible as far as your geographical location, you shouldn't have too much problem finding a job.

Bear in mind that with many 135 outfits, just faxing them a resume won't cut it. The best thing to do is walk it in and talk to the chief pilot or the DO or whoever is in charge of hiring.

Good luck and hope this helps!

If your 1000 PIC Turbine is in a Caravan, and you are fortunate enough to get hired by Southwest without any sort of type rating, doesn't that change the training requirements when you go buy your 737 type? Doesn't it add training/expense that someone with a type rating in another aircraft would aviod?

Try checking out some skydiving outfits also. A lot of them might have you start out in a c206 or something, but if they have twin otters, king airs, etc... you will have the chance to fly them as well. the same is probably true with some air charter services and cargo companys.
Good Luck

Turbine PIC is Turbine PIC no matter wether it is in a twin or a single. Some major airlines (I believe UPS?)will require that you have 1000 turbine PIC in an aircraft with a GTOW over 20K lbs. Most will say "Part 121 PIC experience prefered". But for the most part you just need to fill in the turbine PIC column. With your time you can find a PIC job flying turbine equiptment. I worked for a freight company call Airnow. They hire many C208 pilots as PICs with 1200 hours. They also have EMB-110s (only 13K GTOW) with a very quick upgrade. It took me three months. Try www.airnow.com. The company is so so to work for but it's good experience.

I dunno, Rattler, I'd heard (but not seen myself) that some airline applications specificly exclude fixed gear turbine single from the turbine column. Anyone out there confirm this?

I have seen that on some forms, however i don't think many people are that concerned about it. I think it is mostly there as away of separating out the different times.
