We landed at SGF a few minutes ahead of the Waterski crew. The CFR trucks rolled as we blocked in. Listening to the tower freq, we heard about a jet with a fire in the cockpit...chilling to say the least. We watched as the E145 landed, rolled out and came to a stop just short of the 14/20 intersection. The main cabin door was open immediately and the pax started running out into heavy rain. The second lady down the stairs tripped and did a faceplant right on the runway...kinda hurt just to watch. From what I could see, the crew did a fantastic job getting everyone out in a great hurry.

I walked to the firehouse a few minutes later to see about getting the crash truck crews to refuel us (same employees). I saw the flight crew getting debriefed, and made eye contact with the F/A. I gave her a thumbs-up and said 'nice job'. Great work you guys. The FO apparently had burns on her hand but was doing well. A fire in the cockpit is one of the worst things I can ever imagine... glad you pulled it off safely.

Do they have EVAS in those planes?

Hopefully won't ever have to use it, but after having to demo it during the sim, looks like it would help in a smoke filled cockpit.

.

Nope we dont have those. They proably cost money so we won't get them. We just have the regular O2 mask and smoke goggles.

Didn't TSA have another inflight fire a few weeks ago?

Just about a month or so ago and it landed in SDF if I remember.

Don't the cockpit side windows open on the ERJ? Can they be opened in flight?
Knowing nothing about the particular window, if the aircraft is unpressurized, it should open. However, if there is an active fire in the cockpit, I'm not sure it would be a great idea because of the possibility of the fire flaring up even more due to the rush of oxygen. Kind of a gamble either way I guess...

I wonder who they got to ferry the plane back to STL? I can just imagine that conversation. Well its XXX system that failed and caused the fire, but it ops checked ok with no more fire or smoke so I guess its ok. No but seriously good to hear our co-workers are ok.

rjacobs.....come on man! Our co- workers? I hope your just joking around with the profile because its kinda embarrassing!

I was just joking around about the maintenance and ferry thing. I fly for TSA and would not want anybody I work with to get hurt and I hope nobody I work with would want me to get hurt either.

Plane still sits in SGF. Not sure when it's going to leave. I think there will be an investigation by the NTSB and FAA.

Thanks for all of the kind words everyone! I can't really give too many details, but I will say we did have a fire in the cockpit and it was quite an event. I was sure glad to get on the ground safely. :)

CRJ aircraft have been plagued by a contactor under the cockpit getting wet and causing electrical problems and small fires near the O2 line.

Does anyone know if the ERJ has had a similar problem? I know the two airplanes are apples/oranges, but who knows? Only so many parts makers out there.

Not trying to start a bull thread here, just curious as an RJ Captain trying to stay smart.

And my hats off to the crew. Sounds like a great job. 1 faceplanted passenger is a great score compared to what could've been.

I can hear it now. "Hey guys, nice job. The company would like to show our appreciation by offering you each one additional buddy pass this year." ----------- "Hey, where's your hat?"
