Ok, I got this foward today...as with most forwards I trash them ....but this seems weird. Anybody heard of this?

Emphasis is mine in the body of the notice........ CFI’s….I think you MUST do this..........just to avoid any other hassle!!

[AND, if any of you are the new Authorized Aircraft Instructors (AI’s) for experimental aircraft….I would take it….since you have ‘flight instructor privileges’]

This ‘slipped up’ on me…. I was not aware of the requirement…until an especially alert admin of mine pointed out ‘must complete’ in the wording….

And, who knows…..”I’m from the TSA and here to help you!”…might occur ‘out of the blue’.

All certified flight instructors and flight school staff must complete TSA security-awareness training by Tuesday, Jan. 18. The deadline applies to all CFIs, whether or not they intend to train foreign students, Robert Albracht, director of GA ops for the TSA, told AVweb yesterday. Luckily, compliance is fairly simple. The TSA program is available online, and takes about a half-hour to complete. At the end, the instructor can print out a certificate and retain it as a record of completion.

That is the link.

I have no idea if this is BS or not.

It's the real deal. There's a certificate that you print once you complete the course. It's very simple.

TSA=Thousands Standing Around

I did drive one...until I blew the engine last month:(

In the rebuild process right now...gathering all the parts and should rebuild it in FEB and be running down the strip by March:)

How about you?

I did it about a month ago or so. It was quite possibly the biggest waste of an hour ever. I swear it's just some guy sitting in a corner cubicle making up rules on the fly. None the less, it's the real deal, and I now feel like an expert at spotting a terrorist.

I also took the test and printed the certificate at the end. However, I did not find it clear if ALL CFI's have to do this, regardless........ OR, if only CFI's who give instruction towards a private, commercial, multi or instrument ticket have to do it. For instance, I am an "in-house" instructor (check airman), and pretty much only give recurrency checkrides, BFR's etc to my co-workers. So I was not sure if I even had to do it or not. (But I did it anyway.)

Anyone have a clue?

You can choose to not do it by finding obscure loopholes, but try explaining your position to a non-instructor... wait, non-pilot TSA agent ("Duh... GA is a mortal threat to the American Way! I MUST stop this person!") just looking for a way to justify his/her job. Good luck.

1. Yes you must do this if you have anything related to "instructor" on any of your certificates. ATPs supposedly are exempt, but I wouldn't count on it.
2. You must have two people at your school sign the certificate. If you are a single flight instructor, get your cat or dog or a notary public to sign it.
3. You must write the word "inital" on that piece of paper.
4. You must keep the paper for 5 years.
5. You must show that paper to any TSA or FAA employee that asks to see it. There is no provision for 'reasonable request' or 'within a reasonable time'.
6. You must complete some sort of security training every year from now until the rule is eliminated.

See AOPA's web site for more info.

Actually it says right in the training course that you are not required to do the TSA study course. Flight schools may develop their own in-house training program for their instructors so long as it meets the requirements of 14CFR1552.

If this is mandatory though, when were they planning on notifying all CFIs? And shouldn't this apply to ATP's? I mean they are the ones usually training airline pilots?

I was just reading through it and the first quiz question was "what do you do if a simulator student asks you if this airplane could be flown into the Hoover Dam? " Are you fukcing kidding me? Who wrote this garbage?

Hey Wankel,

I used to have an RX7. I think it was 1977...the first year they came out. Bought it from some guy..it had beem sitting in his yard for a few years.

Anyway, it got about 12mpg.....I would set the RPM buzzer off on a regular basis. It was a lot of fun to drive. The apex seals couldn't take! Fun engines...smoooth even at 7500rpm.

Good luck on the rebuild...there's tons of speed parts!

hahaha.....I missed a bunch. I don't have a "supervisor" :) Anyhow....my favorite was what you would do if a student asked "Do you think this plane could be flown into the Hoover Dam?" hahahahaha

Advice from NAFI

Here's an email on the subject sent to members of the National Association of Flight Instructors:

Security Awareness Training Deadline 18 January, 2005

NAFI reminds its members and all flight instructors that TSA / Dept. of Homeland Security has mandated that all flight school employees complete security awareness training no later than January 18. The definition, from the Federal Register announcement of the mandate, reads as follows.

Flight school employee means:
a flight instructor or ground instructor certificated under 14 CFR Parts 61, 141, or 142;
a chief instructor certificated under 14 CFR Part 141;
a director of flight training certificated under 14 CFR Part 142; or
any other person employed by a flight school, including an independent contractor, who has direct contact with a flight school student. This includes an independent or solo flight instructor certificated under 14 CFR Part 61.

While the rule technically requires the training even of independent instructors who are certificated but not active, NAFI suggests that a reasonable alternative may be sustainable. Current employees of flight schools must complete training by 18 January, and those hired after 18 January must complete the training within 60 days of hiring. If a currently inactive flight instructor undergoes the training promptly upon becoming active after 18 January, TSA may approve the delay in training. We emphasize that this is an area that has not been addressed specifically by TSA, and NAFI encourages all instructors to complete the training prior to 18 January.

The training is available online at https://download.tsa.dhs.gov/fssa/training/ and can be completed in about an hour.

Numerous members have experienced difficulty in printing out the completion certificate when finishing the training.

Should you have further questions concerning this or any issue related to flight training, please contact NAFI. We are to help you, the active flight instructor.

Unless they mail all of the CFI's in the country about this bull then it is bull. I stopped flight instructing in december and don't plan to do it anytime soon but to keep my ticket up. I ain't doin that sheit. I never got any mailing from the FAA, TSA, government or what not. TSA needs to start employing some pilots to make these pointless rules. Would make sense wouldn't it, but of course not what government agency makes sense. Theres like thousands and thousands of us CFI's out there and they pull this crap on us. And theres hundreds of thousands of students. There are further implications of the TSA down the road such as the restrictions of liberties and the such and further restriction and cost to aviation and the student. Soon we will be like europe or japan where it costs something like 50 grand to get a license and restrictions up the wazoo. AOPA can only slow them down they can't stoppem. Oh well i guess its a new world of terrorists control all and what can the little man do. :(

TSA Web Site for CFI Test.... Blown Up By Terrorist??

Apparently the terrorists were worried enough about that site (which I suspect was written and programed by Mrs. Jone's kindergarten computer class) that they blew it up; either that or I broke it.

I was taking the test this afternoon and got through the entire group of teeny terrorist all the way to the last pint size airplane when the site went dead. Haven't been able to log on since. It's hard to believe that we're letting people that can't even run a website, be responsible for the protection of this country. What did they expect when they waited 'till the last few days to get the word out about that ridiculous test? I'll bet they got a million people trying to log on at the same time.

But, at least I'm gonna' sleep better tonight knowing that the TSA is out there making sure no GA airplane has "beefed-up" or muddy landing gear. :rolleyes: He!!, everybody at our airport has muddy landing gear including the sheriff and a couple of judges. Maybe they'll turn themselves in because, I'm sure not going to.

And, a word of caution for any of you terrorist wannabe's out there...... rest assured that if I catch you with a pry bar working on my airplane, I'm gonna' contact my supervisor alright..... right after I beat you to a bloody froth and send you on a personal meet-and-greet with allah and your 70 virgins. By the way, has allah ever said how old those virgins were? Or how much they weighed? Hmmmm??

Be careful what you get your skull caved in for. :)
