Going to Montreal in Januay. Can anyone recommend a part of the city to stay in and any good hotels? What is the night life like? Any recommendations on any good Grill's and Bar's would be great.

Don't get caught up with any street-walkers. They'll meet you with a couple of dude's, beat you senseless and take whatever you have. Be wary of any 6' 2" Blond wearing a skirt and CFM boots in the middle of winter... That goes for any city...

Montreal

I went to Montreal for a weekend in 1992. I second St. Catherine's Street. I recall an Indian restaurant in the vicinity that was alright.

Public transportation in Montreal, be it taxi or subway, is excellent. Subways were clean back then - and probably are now, too - and taxis arrive within minutes after you call for them.

Have a nice trip!

1426 Bishop Street, McKibbin's Irish pub. Murphy's on tap ("it's just like sucking on your mothers teet!!"). Le milsa across the street has awesome food! All located just off St Cates! Enjoy, I always do!:D

I remember my first overnight in YUL. 10 minutes after we checked in at the hotel my first officer calls me in my room to tell me there is "30 plus pages of escort listings in the phone book". You gotta love any city where the E section of the yellow pages is the thickest.

Gotta second St. Catherines St. and the Pink Palace also. Every other shop/bar on St. Catherines St. seems to be a "Gentlemens Club".

I recommend using a credit card whenever you can, you'll get the best exchange rate.

Have Fun, it gets freekin cold up there this time of year.

eh?

30 plus pages of escort listings in the phone book
....as opposed to 30 plus pages of lawyer adveritisements in any US phonebook.

The Canadians are doing something right! :)

Try dinner at Baton Rouge restaurant while there.

As a university student there now, here is my brief rundown:

Crescent Street - great bars/clubs; but very toursity, (relatively) expensive drinks, cover & coat check.

St-Laurent Street - awesome bars/clubs, whatever is your type of place, they've got it. From the bar where Hollywood stars in town shooting go, to the 5 cent shooters, it's all there.

St-Cathrine - strip clubs, though too far east and you're in the gay village. Remember "Danceuses" is the feminin gender of the word Dancers, while "Danseurs" is the masculin!

St-Denis - the endless choice of restaurants, with a huge variety in price range, rivals New York.

The nice thing about all of these places is that they're all within walking distances to each other. Though with January being -35C on a good day, a cab ride is a cheap alternative!

PM me for more questions, or if you feel like buying this starving college student a drink when you're in town!

What the hell are CFM boots?

CFM......Come F-me boots

Kinda like high heels are called Come F-me heels.....ditto for pumps

Chicks look great in them....as long as they are chicks

St. Viator st bagels are a treat. There is a very famous deli, but can't recall the name of it now. Ask the concierge where to get "smoked meat" and you'll be pointed in the right direction.

Yes but the real question is...what kind of meat is it? I was in the middle of eating a smoked meat sandwich (quite tasty) in Ottawa and I asked the waitress what kind of meat it was...

"Ummm...I dunno...I'll ask the chef"

10 Minutes later....

"He doesn't know either"

That was the end of that!

Smoked meat is beef, it's really just very lean pastrami.

The famous place is Schwartz's on St. Laurent.

Alrighty... It wasn't that it didn't taste good, I just had a hard time eating a sandwich that even the Chef didn't know what it contained!

Hmm, sounds like a personal problem. I guess you don't fly a lot of hard core International, eh? ;-)

As for the chef, probably just didn't know what the word was in English...

Stop by a "La Belle Province" (local notso fast food..cooked to order) and get yourself a Poutine! Nothing beats these big tader fries in a gravy type sauce with lots-o melted cheese curds. Sounds weird, but tastes GREAT!! They make a great smoked meat sandwitch, too.

If you're ever there during decent weather, tooling around the Old Port is neat. All kinds of shops, restaurants, street performers, etc. Though I haven't been to the Casino on the island in the St. Lawrence river, I hear it's pretty good, too.

Cabs have a fixed rate to downtown from the airport...somewhere around $35CDN or so...I think. There's also a commuter train near the airport that goes downtown, and I think there's a bus at the airport that links to it, but I'm not quite sure about that particular operation. I think it's only $10 or so to use it.

Hope you have fun. It's a cool place to visit!

You nailed it... My biggest nutritional issue is trying to figure out if the bag of Andy Capps Hot Fries in the vending machine at the East Bumblef*ck FBO is past it's prime or not... ;) Not too many choices at 3am.....

For local bar try the Cock and Bull. It has beer, darts, locals and greasy food...
