Transition Level/Altitude

Can someone provide a link that clearly explains/discusses the usage of Transition Levels and Altitudes ?

I cannot find one and need to send it to a buddy who will be doing some international flights.

Pretty Simple:

Transition Level: When Descending through the Transition Level, Set QNH-local altimeter setting.

Transition Altitude: When Climbing through the Transition Altitude, Set 29.92.

Both are published on Jepp charts.

An easy way to remember it that I was told is:

transition Altitude
"A" in altitude points up..means climbing-- set 29.92"


transition leVel..."V" points down..descending -- set local QNH.

That's a good way to remember it... That's something you'd see from the Kings.

I told him Transition Level = "Level = Local altimeter"

"Altitude = Above"

but he wanted a link to see it with his own eyes

Read the plate. Some FMS data bases with certain cockpit displays have the transition levels and altitudes built in and provide an alert on the ND but you can't count on that. Depending on the airport I fly to it changes from destination to destination. Just up your game a little bit and he will be fine.

That's how I remember it. Starting from a level: TL, starting from an altitude: TA.

This has always been confusing to me as well. The A and the V is a good tip. To me, transition level SHOULD mean, when i'm entering the flight levels!, not when I'm leaving them.
