I just read on tsalounge.com that Trans States management has advised their pilot group that they have to start hiring Captain Qualified First Officers which make a great deal more money than a new hire would. All because they are pretty badly understaffed and taking on more RJ's. Here is a piece of the memo I took from tsalounge.com.

SNIP....

We are also trying to address the currently ongoing situation of flight crewmember being junior assigned to cover open flight segments at a rate higher than we would like to see. Along with this we are also increasing our flight time in March and beyond to better utilize our aircraft. This increased turboprop activity coupled with our jet growth, will result in further taxing of our crew resources. In order to assist us with this problem, we are going to begin hiring Captain Qualified First Officers (CQFOs). This is not in anyway meant to take away upgrading opportunities from our current First Officers, but to fill the position until our current pilots can be trained (we will continue to upgrade until the CQFOs are no longer assigned Captain flying). At the present time we are placing the CQFOs into the turboprop aircraft. This move is an operational necessity and will allow us to continue the steady growth of the company, while continuing to create opportunities for everyone.

Strange...

They phoned to recall me less'n two months ago and said the only availability was for the right seat of the 41... When they'd initially hired me over a year ago to be a CQFO in same. Interesting that they are back to the CQFO thing, I thought for sure that most of those people they were unable to upgrade back in mid-2001 (because they didn't have the flight hour minimum) would have the time by now.

Oh we all have the time to upgrade PLUS A THOUSAND MORE!!! The problem is that they have kept us so understaffed that they can't afford to pull us offline to upgrade us because we dont have enough F/O's to cover our slots when were in class. For example even though we are getting about 2 RJ's a month our last upgrade class only had 3 people in it because they can't afford to pull f/o's off line. All management and training department are flying regularly. By hiring CQFO's (mostly people who used to work for TSA and are now on furlough) they CLAIM that they can fill both a captain and an F/O slot with 1 training event enabling them to pull the senior F/O's offline to place them in upgrade and doing it cheaper. It's a big First Officer F$#k-over!!! All the F/Os are pissed as hell because these guys will come in off the streets sit left seat to us and make more money than us. Not only that is they sit right seat they make more money too. All the pilots are enraged. All they have to do is keep us adequately staffed but NO they always want to run us at minimum staffing levels all the time so they have to Junior Avail us and trying to get a trip drop approved is next to impossible. Hopefully things will change with the new hiring going on. But the CQFO thing is not the answer in my opinion.

That's what I figured.

It made sense a year and a half ago, when the vast majority of F/O's didn't have the time, but since almost all of those F/O's now have a thousand more hours now than they did then, it's hard to believe that they are ineligible to upgrade.

It's also hard to believe that the company couldn't have seen this coming. It seems that TSApilot has a point. Good luck to you guys.

TSA CONTACT INFO

For TSA pilot, whats going on at TSA is not right at all and its not fair for you guys.

Anyway, I am looking for work and need the contact info for the Flt ops at TSA. Can you help?

You can be my captain anytime.

TSAPilot...did you whine that much when you were a student pilot a few years ago? Want some cheese to go with that?

That is all...

Anybody know what they require for street captains? Would 2500tt and 1000tt be adequete. Also do these street captains get a bad rap from the pilot group....?

Unless they have changed it...

In July of 2001, those required minimums were, to the best of my recollection....

3000tt
1350me

But then again, that's just what I remember. I don't recall if they required an ATP or if they would include that with the type ride... Certainly an ATP written is a requirement.

Your barely-veiled accusations notwithstanding, Dragin, if you'd read the thread you'd know the answer to the question.

Read the post that started the thread and there you will find the answer.

I hear ya, brother...

Dragin is usually more on the ball than this! Must've been away from his computer for a day or so...

Does anyone know what TSA’s minimums are? Or more important what the completive minimums are?
Thanks

Good luck buddy.:)

how much are the CQFO's making? If they are just filling in until the regular FO's are in school then will they be bumped to the right seat after that or continue to fly as PIC and SIC?

Opps, been out of the fight for a couple of weeks with illness in family. Didn't read the snipit close enough.

At any rate, it may be of interest that I think the one-list push at AA/AE may be picking up a bit of steam.

Are these TSA street captains to staff AE's RJ's while AE pilots are one furlough?

Actually, these stret captains are to staff AX turboprops while TSA crews staff AE's 14 transferred RJs while AE pilots are on furlough.

You had the right idea, just missed the pertinent details. TSA can't keep up with their "jet growth" while AE is giving them jets to stem our own jet growth. All in the name of contractual hamstringing. It's hell when the limitations imposed on one's career are all artificial.

And yes, I am an opinionated a$$.
