hey guys & gals, i was wondering if anyone had any info on the training at atlas, specifically;how long is it? where is it done? and finally, do you get any compensation while training? i would like to hear from anyone that has knowledge about these matters. thanx in advance.

Did you get hired into the 747-200 or 400? How many are expected to be hired in the near term?

Aye, the classic.

Ya can never study too much in the hotel room:

The more ya can memorize the normals, abnormals and emergencies, the easier time ya will have in the sim.

(As any airplane)

Some of the flap / flight control problems seems quite similar, split, asymetrical, etc:..Make sure ya call for the right check-list in the sim.

On the V-1 cuts, push the nose down to get more traction from the nose wheel, then at V-R come slowly back on the yoke with full rudder, as ya will always loose an outboard engine.

On the 3 engine approach to cat II mins, ya wil get a go-around, and then an engine fire on the same side...After clean-up, the weather is all of a sudden VMC and ya will shoot a visual on 2 engines....Memorize the profiles before ya go in the sim...Hint, hint.

thanx for the info. one more question... do they put you up for training or do you have to pay for hotel during training?
 
You are put up in an Embassy Suites at Atlas Air's expense. I heard that they are also using another hotel, but it is as nice.


If you stay at the Embassy, don't do the happy hour every night. One or two nights a week is OK, but it is a major distraction, and there are eyes watching.

London base is NOT the life you wanna live... and the livingin London is HIGH and you can't affort it on your salary...i been there.

It is very very stressful to commute...may be impossible. 18 to 22 day ON and have 3 to 4 days to commute if you are lucky, and 4 day off at home.

Thay have cancelled my class twice after i gave up my current job....never trust them again.
 
For the guys based out of London, what are the primary routes (Europe, Africa, ME or Asia)? Anyone know which sectors they fly? I have seen pictures of the Atlas Classics in Dubai. What about the schedules out of STN - week on/week off or similar?

I doubt any Atlas guys would actually live in London proper - that's waaaay too expensive and the actual commute to Stansted would only work via train (not too difficult I am told - but don't plan on driving to work). I am sure you would live nearer to Stansted. Just ask any Ryanair pilots where they live and you will most likely find some suitable housing.

I bet the commute from the States to the UK would be difficult. However, it may be possible to bid back to the States after a year or two. Look at it as a European adventure for a few years and then you'll return to the States. Flying a Classic around the world wouldn't be too bad - I can think of worse things (like flying for USAirways as the pilot contract deteriorates)...

When people say it takes 3 to 4 days to commute to Europe, they are full of it. I use to do it and it took the same amount as going from the east coast to the west coast. Most Atlas guys jumpseat the day before on a company plane from HSV, ORD, MIA, or JFK. I use to use AA or NWA. Never a problem. And yes it would only take one day of my life.
Also, someone said that eyes were watching you in the bar. They just want to eat your left over food!!! Damm freight doggs.......
