Any of you guys read The Probable Cause by Robert Serling? Interesting book, if you can find it.

One chapter discusses a TWA Martin 404 that took off, started to climb, then flew into the only mountain in the area. The only conclusion the NTSB could come to was that Captain Ivan Spong crashed the aircraft deliberately. Another TWA pilot eventually proved that the Martin's relatively new fluxgate compasses were not as "error proof" as was believed. They were later found to be the cause of the accident.

Here's the point: Captain Spong's wife and children received harassing and threatening phone calls for weeks after the accident. Before I read that, it never occured to me that people's emotions would lead them to vengeful acts after an airline accident.

The death of this controller reminds me of Captain Spong's story.
