JAL eyes 7 bln Yen in cost cuts over 2 years
Tue Jun 15, 2010

June 16 (Reuters) - Debt-ridden Japan Airlines Corp's pilot division is aiming to slash 7 billion yen ($76.53 million) in costs in the next two years, the Nikkei reported.

The retirement of some 60 aging aircraft by the end of March is one of the core steps JAL plans to take in its rehabilitation, the paper said.

Consequently, about 400 pilots, around double the number in normal years, will need training in other aircraft types, which could drive up costs significantly at the pilot division, the paper said.

To minimize the rise in costs, JAL will freeze training to promote staff as co-pilots at its training base at Shimojishima airport in Okinawa Prefecture, the Nikkei said.

The company also plans to more efficiently assign trainers, and shutter its flight training center in Napa Valley, in the U.S. state of California, the daily said,

In addition, the airline will cut costs in various other areas, including in-flight meals for pilots, and downgrade hotel accommodations, the Nikkei said. ($1=91.46 Yen) (Reporting by Anand Basu in Bangalore; Editing by Vyas Mohan)

Staying with AA and One World sure helped them out a lot......great decisions JAL management....that $500 million from DL and Skyteam could have helped a bit, eh???

Thank God... The locals in Napa absolutely DETEST that flight school, and so do I.

Nothing like burning gas for 20-30 minutes waiting for 5 bonanzas and a 310 to get the hell out of the way for the 6 or 7 corporate jets waiting to take off because they're on instrument approaches and the tower won't squeeze people in and out around them.

Good riddance. Go find some other airport to screw around in with your training department... one that's about 100 miles from the nearest busy G.A. or 121 airport.

I personally heard Anderson say that in hindsight, he's glad the JAL deal fell through. We were offering too much $$.

Ha, Ha! You guys lose. If you can't recognize the AMR corporate fingerprints on JAL, you must be blind.

JAL is now following the AMR corporate template of 'shrinking to profitability' that has allowed AA to dominate the U.S. airline business since 2003. This plan has thrust American Airlines from its position as largest airline to third largest airline. We have you right where we want you.

You may now cower in fear...

I believe that there will be a few more events in regard to JAL. AMR is writing big checks that they really cannot afford right now. Time will tell thought.

One rumor was that JAL and ANA would merge. Not sure if ANA would do that, but it is possible.

If you fly GA in norcal, this is nothing but a blessing...

Nothing like getting stuck at the threshold behind a JAL Bonanza in the middle of summer... at CIC... :uzi:

You can always afford big checks to the executives! That is where the money should be spent!

Name me another executive team that has done a better job at shrinking their airline and conceding market share to competitors.

See?

How is putting IASCO Flight Instructors on the street a blessing? You guys are complaining about the traffic at Napa? GA in the Bay Area is like a ghost town compared to what it was in the late 1990's. Also, JAL (and ANA) cut their training way back compared to the 1990's as well. It is a great instructor job and they ran a first rate operation...now those poor guys will be unemployed. A lot of businesses in Napa depended on that JAL training contract (MX, housing, restaurants, etc)

JAL has been shutting things down for awhile. They stopped their 747 training in Moses Lake, Wa a year or two ago. When I was there they flew a couple 747's all day doing approaches and touch n goes. It was kinda cool as a newbie to be in the pattern with some heavy iron. Those guys drank lots of beer at the bowling alley too.
