JAL eyes 7 bln Yen in cost cuts over 2 years
Tue Jun 15, 2010
June 16 (Reuters) - Debt-ridden Japan Airlines Corp's pilot division is aiming to slash 7 billion yen ($76.53 million) in costs in the next two years, the Nikkei reported.
The retirement of some 60 aging aircraft by the end of March is one of the core steps JAL plans to take in its rehabilitation, the paper said.
Consequently, about 400 pilots, around double the number in normal years, will need training in other aircraft types, which could drive up costs significantly at the pilot division, the paper said.
To minimize the rise in costs, JAL will freeze training to promote staff as co-pilots at its training base at Shimojishima airport in Okinawa Prefecture, the Nikkei said.
The company also plans to more efficiently assign trainers, and shutter its flight training center in Napa Valley, in the U.S. state of California, the daily said,
In addition, the airline will cut costs in various other areas, including in-flight meals for pilots, and downgrade hotel accommodations, the Nikkei said. ($1=91.46 Yen) (Reporting by Anand Basu in Bangalore; Editing by Vyas Mohan)
Staying with AA and One World sure helped them out a lot......great decisions JAL management....that $500 million from DL and Skyteam could have helped a bit, eh???
