I have a small question to all that push the lovely CRJ. When in the approach phase why does the flap warning go off when you are below flap limit speed. Example, when I or the captain are flying and we call for flaps 30 or 45 the alarm goes off and we are at least 5-10 knots below extension speed. It doesn't happen all the time but it occurs often. I talked to other pilots at my airline and they say it happens to them also but could not give me a answer. So I come to the "Experts" here at Flightinfo and see what some think. Not a major issue but was just wondering as it happened to me today.

My personal observation (6 yrs. and around 5000 hours on the plane) is that if you're within 3 knots of 185 for Flaps 30 or 3 knots of 170 for Flaps 45, then the overspeed warning will go off. I don't know why it works that way, but I generally wait until I'm 5 knots under limit speed for Flaps 30 or 45 to call for the flaps. It's not an issue for Flaps 8 or 20, because as far as the airplane is concerned, the limit speed for those flap settings is 235 (or maybe 230). The 215 limit is FAA imposed due to the flap twisting issue that was a problem several years ago.

Just my personal observations.

Thanks guys....it's homemade! Not an actual picture of me....cause my hair are much more spiky than this...Now, if y'all excuse me, I have a crj waiting for me!

Best avatar yet. Just to let you know though, its not all 500 hour wonders that are like that. I was nonreving the other day and saw an ASA FO, had to be about 30 years old. No hat, top button unbuttoned, tie pulled down, jacket hanging open, and backpack slung over his shoulder. It was his FIRST flight of the day, and he looked like he was getting off the last leg of a 4 day trip in July. I almost said something to him.

If is a clacker then you're just too clse to the redline(the new one that gets propogated with the new flap selection) when you select that flap setting. I've noticed MANY times that when you make that selection you'll get a clacker for a second or two if it's close. Also, if the gear isn't down and you select flaps to 30 don't you get the gear horn?....kind of sounds like a dial tone if I remember. Seems I remember getting that occasionally on the "gear down, flaps 30, blah blah blah" routine.

By the way, that's some of the best and quickest thread drift I've seen in a while. Bravo!

It's just a software thing on the CRJ. Don't know if there is a real reason or not, our manual just says it's a software glitch.

I have no ideas why the horn sounds while lowering those flaps....so I will say that it has to do with something in the aft equipment bay...Probably!
