anyone have any insight into a police physical fitness test; i've got one coming up. apparently i'm supposed to jump a six foot wall with a weight belt on (simulating a gun belt) and maybe drag a 160 pound dummy, etc.

i guess i'm looking for an idea of what to expect, etc. and if i should practice pull ups , etc.

it seems crazy to switch careers now that i've finally got all this multi experience, etc.

that's life. (maybe i'll try for law enforcement aviation). thanks

also, I'd appreciate tips on preparing for the written test

I worked in law enforcement for a few years. My department was suburban Chicago and our physical was more or less the same as a 1st class FAA medical. We did not have to do anything in uniform or resembling high school PE class <smrik>. Those of you ready to jump in with the doughnut and larda$$ jokes, we're all in shape. <smirk>.

:D ;)

oh yeah, pilot stories STILL get more play than cop stories...

I don't know what the particular department you are testing for wants, but I would bet that you will need to be able to run two miles under 16 or 18 minutes, minimum of 40 pushups and situps in two minutes, and probably three pull ups. (MIN., more to be cometitive)

If you can do those, I'm sure whatever specialilzed test like the wall climb will be easy enough.

Where I work..

You have you run a mile and a half in 12 minutes or less If you are a woman you get 14 minutes . The main issues on the medical are color blindness , blood pressure and cardiac health. they are afraid of people getting disability for heart trouble .Also stay clear of any drug issues . Being a cop is great for the first 5 years then gets old quick I retire in 20 months with a full pension and cant wait People usually only remember cops when they get a ticket not for when you resucitate someone in cardiac arrest . Good luck !!! Chas

I just left a major department in the midwest. Their test was mostly an evaluation of your cardiovascular fitness. If you can run, jump and climb stairs, you will do fine. It only takes about 3 minutes, but it quckly becomes tiring while dragging the dummy (about 150 lbs) at the end. You can PM me with any questions.

This may be what you are looking for. I took the test about 6 months ago, took a job with the FD instead.

Cops are just Firemen that couldn't pass the test. :D

The Physical Agility Test consists of:

1. Applicant begins test seated in police vehicle, door closed, seat belt fastened.
2. Exit vehicle, jump/climb a six foot barrier (this type of exercise determines whether a candidate can pull themselves up on any type of object.)
3. Complete a one-quarter (1/4) mile Run/Walk, making various turns (this task simulates a pursuit run)
4. Jump a simulated five (5) foot culvert/ditch
5. Drag/Carry a human simulator, (175 lbs. In weight) a distance of 50 feet. (After locating either an injured person or apprehending a criminal suspect, an officer is required to pull or carry the subject from the location of the incident in order to save the person's life, or to keep the person from receiving further injury, or to effect an arrest.)
6. Draw and Dry Fire the police weapon, five (5) rounds with strong hand and five (5) rounds with weak hand. (Police Officers must have the finger and hand strength to hold the police pistol in one hand while pulling the trigger.)
