When I flew the Canyon, I sometimes made more on tips than the company paid me. Its Vegas, you tip everyone, and you get what you pay for. I just find it unethical that the company includes average tips in your expected income (off the record conversations of course) to entice new pilots. If they can only pay $450 every two weeks, it becomes a big part of the pilots income to get tips, so they end up "begging" via home made tour (tip) cards.
As an instructor, I don't charge much for ground, because I want my student to have the financial resources to progress. If they want to tip me to show their appreciation, I'll accept, but it hasn't happened yet.
On the other hand, I used to tip my instructors, especially those who wouldn't charge for ground time, or those whose companies took 70%+ of the revenue from the amount charged for instruction. I mean come on, my instructor was worth the $35 an hour I was being charged, not the $11 they paid him.
