American Cancer Society Names United Airlines’ Glenn F. Tilton CEO Of The Year

CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The American Cancer Society, the nation’s largest voluntary health organization, has presented Glenn F. Tilton with its inaugural Corporate Impact: CEO of the Year Award– Excellence in Leadership and Impact. As part of the American Cancer Society Corporate Impact Award Series, the CEO of the Year Award honors a corporate chief executive officer’s excellence in leadership, personal commitment of time, and impact in the fight against cancer in the workplace. Tilton is chairman of United Continental Holdings, Inc. and immediate past chairman, president and chief executive officer of United Airlines.
“For many years now, Glenn has been a passionate and tireless advocate for the Society’s efforts to save lives,” said John R. Seffrin, Ph.D., American Cancer Society chief executive officer. “Glenn understands the tremendous impact CEOs can have on the fight against cancer. He continues to lead and to give generously in so many ways to help create a world with less cancer and more birthdays.”

To rally other CEOs, Tilton has served as chair of the Illinois Chapter of the American Cancer Society CEOs Against Cancer and co-chair of the group’s national meeting. CEOs Against Cancer is a collaboration between the American Cancer Society and CEOs working to prevent, detect and reduce the devastating effects and costs of cancer through education and workplace health initiatives, and patient services for employees and their dependents.
Under Tilton’s leadership, United has made cancer-related programs the cornerstone of its volunteer efforts, engaging employees, customers and their families in supporting fund-raising events across the country.
Through a highly successful multi-year, cause-related “Hugyou Teddy Bear Family” program United and its customers have generated more than 148 million airline miles and nearly half a million dollars in cash contributions for cancer patients and their families who need to travel for treatment, and United employees volunteer to deliver special Hugyou bears to children undergoing cancer treatment in hospitals.
Jackie Tilton is a key contributor to the fund-raising programs, with Jackie and Glenn Tilton consistently supporting the annual American Cancer Society Discovery Ball, chairing the most successful event in 2008, which raised more than $2 million. They also became two of the founding members of the Laureate Society, a leading donor recognition group of the American Cancer Society.
