Don't know how many of you guys waste your time on airliners.net, but you might have a laugh at this thread, "Pilot Salary"

I especially like this zinger, Reply 46:

"[FONT=ARIAL, Helvetica, Geneva][FONT=ARIAL, Helvetica, Geneva][FONT=Verdana,Helvetica,Arial][SIZE=-1][FONT=ARIAL,]Southwest, Fedex, UPS, American pilots average about 100-350K per year. Only a small amount of doctors make more than 100K."

Would be nice, though.

Heard from a bud in my unit who also is an F/O with FDX that 75 guys back in Memphis in the training center made 400K or over last year.

And you're the real smart one with the CFI license.
Why? I think there's a problem when people who actually know a thing or two about aviation think pilots are living the "Catch me if you Can," Pan Am of the 60's dream. This is the reason you have these guys at Gulfstream willing to pay to fly revenue. They think they're gonna make the big bucks 5-10 years later. There are too many misconceptions about how rich you can be flying jets, and it's pretty sick when legacy pilots are making half of what they used to, or that you can make more flying an EMB at Chatauqua than at USAir.

Line guys or Sim Instructors?

Either way, it can't be close to the average "airline pilot" salary.

Most captains at SWA make in the low-mid 200's, I know a couple with no life who are in the 300's. Adjusted for inflation, these numbers are on par with what we've always made, and I would bet the same is true for FedEx. Once this industry turns around, I would hope all the airlines get back to where they should be historically.

An "average" that has a 250K range. That sounds more like the Hi and the Low. These numbers are probably close with the named airlines.

I know of one who made $310,000 last year as a flex instructor. I think 75 pilots over $400K is a little high.

I think it is a normal cycle.

5-10 years ago too many middle aged pilots spent too much time telling everybody how great their lives were with not much easy flying, tons of money, easy commuting to 2 trips a month, free tickets for the family and friends (so be my friend), great pensions etc.
You know the good old testosterone makes us want to convince the world that we are the coolest and bump up our self esteem.
The word is still out there, unfortunately.

Now as people don't spread too much unrealistic numbers and even not encourage young once to pursue this career... (Well, expect Southwest guys telling everybody that 6 legs a day with 30 min turns and McDonalds on the run is a great lifestyle)

It'll take more effect in a couple of years. General folks will realize that this job is not as cool anymore.

But again the middle class is dying out so who knows with Walmartization and LCC-azation may be $50K and no bennies will be great in 10 years even with 6 leg days...

OK. Sorry - not "AS cool" and beneficial for our families as it used to be.

However, the ExpressJet FO's in my apartment complex still tell every one they meet in the gym that they are pilots and "pilots only have to work 4 days a week for pretty good money".

Yeah it's stuff like that and people talking about pilots making 350K a year that makes the general public not give a sh*t when pilots take 50% and lose their pensions.

So each one made $5,333.34? Retirement must really suck! Maybe you and your bud should just stay in the military, you'd make more money.

There you go EMB - you just stated the root cause of the problem. It's 21 year old RJ f/o's that think flying an RJ at .8 mach and making an ILS to a full stop is the most amazing job in the world. Therefore, with them accepting 25K a year and working 20 days a month because they get to wear the "cool" uniform through the airport, the airlines will continue to pay lower fares because they know they have a pool of cheap labor who will work for any chump change. The invent of the RJ and hiring 20 year olds with 1000 TT and no requirement for any turbine PIC whatsoever has certainly hurt the industry a great deal.

We're in the Guard. It's different. The "bud" that Scrapdog is referring to has 1200 hrs mil and about 13000 civilian (non 121) and has been a Guard baby since day one. Don't turn this into a civ/mil thread, tool.

Scrap is right about the RJ pilots. They've actually killed their own dream of a big payday at the majors. Ironic. And, for the record, I think the 75-dudes-making-400K is a little high. We do have those dudes at FDX, but I think they're in the single digits.

Position and Hold, why do you have to bring that Anet crap here? I think in general I agree with the statement of the guy however, and calling him an idiot is a little out of hand. Fedex and UPS can make over 300K, and maybe Southwest?? I think he probably didn't mean average he meant what they toped out at. And by the way, when have the general public ever gave a $hit? Also I do have to say that your title is misleading, where does it say that he believes ALL pilots make 350 as you imply in the title of this post?

Yeah and the legacy pilots started it with being "too good" to fly RJs. They should have been at mainline carriers from the beginning.

I was at gulfstream 6 years ago, on track for 75k this year and upgrade by dec. Should pull at least 120k next year. I'm glad I went to gulfstream...

(funny thing is that I made 65k at gulfstream during my last year as an instructor)

Really? Because I came across the post and thought it was pretty funny. Making 300-350K a year is not like it used to be 5 years ago. Back in the 2000 UAL days, you'd block 85hrs at what was it...330.00/hr (747) or something along those lines? Now, you make more flying 737s for Southwest than 747s for United.

When did the general public ever give a sh*t? When people bitch about ticket prices and blame pilot unions for paying pilots 300K a year to "program a computer."

That's exactly what happened. Five years ago UAL 747 pilots made 350k/year and now they make about 170k and lost their retirement. The person on Airliner.net was not incorrect in stating that pilots make 100-350k. Of course there are many who will fly for food stamps in order to walk into starbucks on their way to work to show off the uniform.

FOCUS, Gentlemen. An AVERAGE salary is what we should be looking at, not a top salary.

"Artists' salaries vary from 0 to 5 million annually."
"Actors' salaries range from 0 to 50 million!!"
"Athletes' from 0 to 100 million annually!"

WOW! I'm going to be an artist, athlete, or actor when I grow up! They make BIG money.
