Chinese Start Another Mass Dog Slaughter

By CHRISTOPHER BODEEN, Associated Press Writer

document.write(getElapsed("20060804T091312Z"));Fri Aug 4, 5:13 AMUPDATED 2 HOURS 44 MINUTES AGO
SHANGHAI, China - A second Chinese city planned a mass dog slaughter to contain a rabies outbreak, state media said Friday, days after similar massacre in another province drew outrage.
Officials in the eastern city of Jining said Thursday they would kill all dogs within three miles of areas where rabies was found, the official Xinhua News Agency said.
The measure came in response to the deaths of 16 people from rabies in Jining in the last eight months, Xinhua said. It didn't say how many dogs would be killed, but said the city had about 500,000.
Rabies cases are on the rise in China, with more than 2,000 people dying from the disease each year. Only 3 percent of the country's dogs are vaccinated against rabies.
Last week, a county in southwestern Yunnan province killed 50,000 dogs after three people died of rabies. The massacre provoked unusually pointed criticism in state media, while the activist group People For the Ethical Treatment of Animals called for a boycott of Chinese products.
Other slaughters have been reported elsewhere in China this year, although the government says it has no standard policy of destroying dogs.
"I think this is completely insane," Zhang Luping, founder of the Beijing Human and Animal Environmental Education Center, said Friday in response to Jining's announcement.
"What's more, this really damages our national image and sets a really bad example to show how lazy and inconsiderate those local government officials are," Zhang said.
Zhang said there were no laws under which citizens could stop the killings, but said she and other animal protection activists were reaching out through the media to try to change policy.
"I think this brutal and cold-blooded campaign should stop as soon as possible," Zhang said.
People answering phones at Jining's city government and epidemic control center refused to comment or said they weren't authorized to release information to media.
The World Health Organization has not directly criticized the slaughters, but WHO experts have said they underscore a lack of coordination and other problems with China's health care system.
The killings have prompted widespread commentary in state media and online forums, with opinions strong divided.
Rabies attacks the nervous system. In humans, it normally results in death within a week after symptoms develop.

That's about like saying you're going to boycott air. :erm:

FYI, the mice are now outnumbering people by about a hundred to one on the F gates. Look out for a crispy beef special at Chao when Subway opens its pearly gates!

I once saw this show where in China eating rats are considered good luck. Employees go out to the fields and round up rats, and the customers pick them out of a cage to be split and fried like chicken.

In New York City, the rats outnumber the population.

Had Asian Chao for the first time in a few monthes last week. Was fine for the dead head to MDT but got a pain in my gut when I sat down in the right seat. Almost dealyed the flight. My apologies to anyone who has since had to use the MDT crewroom's men's room.

There's a couple of great rat recipes in 101 Ways to Wok Your Dog.

Somming jink?

Exactly!

And the sabaro's next door must get their meat from the same place. Either way, if I eat at either one, it is all going to be a poo poo platter in 25 minutes.

Asian Chao in F Terminal was shut down for 3 weeks by the City of PHL and PHL City Health Dept. about 3 years ago for unsanitary conditions in their kitchen. I refuse to eat anything there, not only for that, but also because they are just very unfriendly people.

Jet Rock gouges you for everything but coffee and takes forever to prepare it.

By the way, Le Petite Bistro in C Terminal, near C23 (around the corner) has great food. So does Cibo's in B terminal with a reasonable Employee Menu. FYI....

Heyas,

The employee cafeteria in MIA would serve up black beans and rice, and plantains. That last leg back to TPA was like a race with the devil, as that stuff was the most powerful laxitive known to man.

Throw in a shot of that cuban coffee they serve in the terminal there (the stuff that comes in the LITTLE cups), and I think you would probably be ready to pop before you got the 2nd engine started.

Any old timer PDTer or Eagle guy should remember this...

Thank God for Subway. Cant wait till they open up. Unfortunately they will be displacing that smoking hot counter girl in that fancy store. I dont even know what that store sells because I cant focus when she is in there. I might have even walked over a few Kids cause of her.

Note to self, go in the fancy store...

I know. I stand upstairs by the crew room and stare at her every chance I get. Maybe she will become a sandwich artist and make a meatball sub for me while I oogle at her hot body.

This evening, I witnessed the Asian Chao "chef" come to the front counter with her 'sanitary gloves' on and pick her nose right in front of me.

I know this is sad to say, but the Chinese food in the F terminal isn't even close to as nasty as the Chinese food in Charlotte's food court.

dec/jan opening. there was no water/industrial elct hook ups. and its phl so getting those installed will take 3 months longer than anywhere else in the world because phl is a dump, and should be fire bombed and burned to the ground.

I'd give just about anything for a BBQ joint like they have the other side of the BK in CLT...although PHL ain't exactly known for pulled pork.

I heard there's a good pizza joint over in D, never ventured over there to check it out. For an airport the size of PHL, food choices are a bit slim...

Its overated. Cheaper than Sbarros, but the slices are smaller. Owner(manager? [lone white white guy who bosses peopel around]) guy is kind of a dick.

Huh, I think the Pizza over in D is pretty dang good, especially compared to any other pizza place in the airport. I get the chills when I even think of F term sbarro. I am not a fan of sbarro, and that sbarro is worse then any other I have ever been to.

Oh, and on our 2 hour "airport productivity breaks", thank god for Cibo, and yes the one in A is better then the one in B.

I was thinking Aug/Sept for Subway, I am now dissapointed. :(

It already is open.

Does no one see the door that goes into Subway. It's right there. It says Subway on it. Just open it up and walk in. I had the best BMT there the other day.

Glad to hear they're wearing gloves. Have you ever tried to flick a booger off of your finger? Much easier with gloves on.

Take a look at my avatar. 10 seconds after I took that picture all the Asian Chao girls jumped out of that van to head into the airport. Guess the burboun chicken isn't paying all the bills.

Can't be any worse than the Chinese place in the MSP Food Court, can it?
