Forgive for sounding like Navin R. Johnson from "The Jerk" (The new phonebooks are here, the new phonebooks are here!!! I'm somebody now!!), and perhaps someone already covered this in a previous thread. But the new pilot certificates are here.

I recently renewed my CFI certificate and just received the permanent copy in the mail. Neat certificates!! They are now plastic... like a credit card but without the raised embossed text. The text is smooth and black... much like most company I.D.s or state DLs these days. You get a nice hologram of the FAA seal on the front. Finally, it is taking on a "Century of Flight" theme with that famous picture of the first powered flight, the Wright's glider, a B737-200, and portraits of the Wright Bros. on the back with security microprinting inlaid into the portraits. Pretty spiffy.

Again, forgive me if this has already been covered. Plus, it's about time we had something better than the old cardboard style certificates. Here is a link the story on the FAA website:

Regards.

An easy way to get new certificates for free is to fill out the form directing the FAA to remove your SSN from their records. It's a wise thing for everyone to do, given the prevalence of identity fraud these days. They'll send all new certificates with a new certificate number.

The form can be downloaded and printed off at http://registry.faa.gov/docs/SSN_Change.pdf or find the link to airman certification.

they doing other new (repairman, A&P, etc...) certificates?

I have a brand new liscense (paper) but it doesn't have my SSN on it. DAMMIT!!!! No free change.

Sent the FAA request for a new certificate number and got all three in the new style. Licence, CFI and IGI. Good looking cards and might actually be able to go throught the wash a couple of times without disintegrating.

If you have a paper certificate, you'll get a newer style license. Enjoy!

Photocopying

Aren't these new ones going to be impossible to photocopy.....ie: applications, company records, et cetera??????

The hologram part maybe, but we're not dealing with vampires here.

Paper certificates will not be automatically replaced. You'll get a new one if you add a certificate or rating, or if you request a replacement for a lost/stolen certificate for $2. The SSN change is a good idea for everyone, and it's free.
