Then when we swtich him, "Contact NY Center on 128.3, Jetblue 1,...GREAT DAY!!!" Anyone out there know what I am referring to or know this guys story?

maybe he really likes his job?
Thats what you call "stating the obvious". i'm not positive but i believe the OP was asking if anyone else has heard the guy on freq before, or knows him. i could be wrong tho as i went to a public high school so my reading and comprehension is low.

Sheesh! Stop being mean. I thought we talked about being mean to people.

Btw, why aren't you on AIM??!?!!!

Yeah, I've flown with him. Nice guy, fun to fly with, loves his job. Does great impressions. Just about what you'd expect.

blue dude, we heard a rumor at the TRACON that he says GREAT DAY because he got layed off from usairways and thats what he told them when he got the news. the rumor that we heard is that he hates his job and he is doing it with utter sarcasm. any idea?

yeah...my friends call me "master of the obvious"

I guess it works....hell if "Master of the Universe" worked for HeMan I guess I could be master of something :p

it could be worse....I could be master of the bater :D

It's not sarcasm, at least not in the sense of being ironic or bitter. I think it's more of a personal catch phrase. I have no idea if it refers to an earlier carrier, but that might be where it started. If I run into him, I'll ask.

Then there's the KC Center controller who says, "Have a dandy day" when he hands you off. Nice Guy.

Of course nobody could beat "Buzz" in ATL approach of years gone by....

I flew a trip with the "great day" dude a few months ago and found him completely genuine, affiable and optimistic. He told me a somewhat apocryphal story about flying a few days after 9-11. It was the first day back to flying and the ground controller (maybe Philly?) was absolutely raping the flights--yelling at folks, mean spirited and otherwise miserable. The GD guy calls USAir XXX taxi with C, GREAT DAY!" The controller shot back "WHAT'S SO GREAT ABOUT IT?"

The freq grew aboslutely silent. The dude replied "Well, my wife loves me, my kids are healthy, I still have a job, and I wasn't one of the 4,000 people killed a few days ago. So it's a great day..."

You could have heard a pin drop--no one said anything for 30 seconds. The ground controller finally came back on the freq and was actually crying. Apologizing to the crowd, he mellowed out a bit.

Sounds made up, I know, but I believe it...Words DO have an effect of folks, you know.

eagleflip, i guess you fly for jetblue. i like the story you shared instead of the one that cirulates at the FAA (about him telling his boss at USAirways GREAT DAY on his final day after being layed off). maybe i will ask him if he really made a Philly controller cry when i talk to the GD Pilot again. he left JFK last night when i was working departure, and i was so tempted to ask him why he always says GREAT DAY, but i didnt do it.

Hey, I just ran into him. He says that his particular greeting started with the PHL incident and just went from there. He just wanted to look on the bright side of things, and figured that if it worked there, it'll work elsewhere. It's not any more complicated than that.

Atl

Not to change the thread but are you familiar with the ATL controler that says "have a great flight sir" with much enthusiasm? It cracks me up although I hear it drives the other controllers he is working with a little crazy. In my opinion, as mechanical as ATL runs it is nice to hear a little change. I've delt with the guy "on frequency" as ground, local, and approach, always super nice.

It;s Buzz in ATL. I too have heard that his fellow atcers don't care for him, nut I like it. Always a pleasure to have him on freq.

....and a good day.

He is probably the only guy whose voice is so recognizable, that pilots check on to his frequency by saying "Buzz" insead of "ATL Center/Approach/Tower..."

There used to be a guy out west(LA or ABQ center I think) that would always end a handoff with "have a happy!". I haven't heard him in a couple years...that guy still around?

Anyone heard the LAX Tower controller who always says "Skeeeyyyyweeesst" for SkyWest Airlines?
That guy's awesome. I hear he's kind of a hippy, with the jeans and denim jacket and stuff. He's a great controller.

I'm picturing Billy Bob Thornton with the feather stuck in his headset....

I haven't heard either DFW controller who has a trademark saying in a while. 'Guuuud....DAY!', and 'AmeriCAN'. Used to hear them alot.
And who's that American pilot who never answers the radio on the first call? Seems like he's working nearly every day!

interesting how someone needs a "Personal catch phrase"

probably the same little kid that had his name ironed on to the back of his T-shirts.

I asked that dude one day while taxiing out what was the deal with that and he said it came from way back when SKYW first came into LAX and it everyone said that, but now only he and a couple of old school guys are still there from that time and still say it.

No reason for it, I guess thats just how they read the strips when they first saw 'em.

If that guy was there "way back when" Skywest first started flying into LAX..

......gotta ask, why is he still at Skywest?

"......gotta ask, why is he still at Skywest?"

Perhaps because he is a controller, rather than a Skywest employee. But it's possible that he's somehow "at Skywest" still.
