It has been reported that solar and cosmic radiation double every 6500 feet. So at FL390 you are getting 64 times the amount of radiation than you would at ground level. If you were to drop down to FL330, that would be 32 times the amount. I have also read that a transatlantic crossing is equal to about a chext x-ray, more during a solar flare up. Also, exposure increases at the poles where the protective atmosphere decreases. More protective atmosphere at the equator. The jury seems to be out about the specific health concerns, but there are certain groups that need to be concerned like pregnant women, those trying to conceive, and like 2 other groups I can't remember. There is a book by Robert Barrish (sp?) called The Invisible Passenger that concerns this very topic.
Anyhow the European airlines seem to inform their crews about this more than US airlines.
Also, I would think some jet setting business professionals who fly very often would also be getting exposed a lot.
