So long my fair Alaska......I just got the call and am moving back to the lower 48. My question, has anyone on this board ever driven this route? Wondering if my old rust bucket of a car will make it. Or would it be easier just to bag that idea and buy a plane ticket and try to sell the car?

Thanks

A friend drove it a few years back and said there are some pretty rough stretches (and long distances between civilizations). If you do drive, I'd highly recommend investing in the "MilePost", it will give you EXACT locations of stops and sights of interest.

I'd also consider a healthy vehicle unless you enjoy long walks through the wilderness looking for a door to knock on!!

I've heard it is an incredible drive though! Good luck.

I've driven it twice. Once in a 4WD vehicle, and once in a regular passenger car. I don't recall it being particularly difficult. One trip was in late November, when there were obviously occasions to take it easy due to wx, but the other time was in May, and it was a fairly easy drive.

I will say that is was one of the most specatcular trips ever. I would highly recommend this trip to anyone. A little advance planning (someone mentioned "The Milepost", which I also highly recommend) would make for an easier time.

One more thing. My last trip was about 10 years ago...but I would think the trip would be even easier now than it was then, due to improvements on the highway, and more facilities along the way.

Enjoy the trip. I wish I was making it again, myself. Maybe one day...:)

Thanks for the info, but it looks as I won't have time to drive it. I really would have like to driven it as I have heard about the magnificence of the scenery.

You are about to make the biggest mistake of your life. Unless like my wife you hate the Alaskan Bush.(and I don't mean the Bush company)

Drove the Alcan in 1980 in a tired '63 Buick Convetible that ran on 7 cylinders.
No spare tire, no jack, no tools, no spare gas, no mile mrakers, charts, etc.

That was when the Alcan had 1500 miles of gravel roads.
You guessed it, on the most remote stretch, got a flat tire...Long hitch-hike and a budget of $20.00 to find a spare, a jack etc..
Everything works out with youthful optimism though.

Got addicted to the Alaskan bush company...Is it still there?

Is the Alaska bush Co. what I think it is? I was thinking of going up to ANC to see if I could find some scantly clad women with dollar bills in their undies.

At the Bush Co. there is no such thing as undies!

I've only been there once. But haven't been back due to the fact that last time I went, I spent so much money I had to work a couple of days to cover the bills. The eye candy there is amazing!

ask Ditchdriver if you still need info. He's driven it very recently (within the past month). In fact, we're staying in a Hostel in Whitehorse on our way back up to Anchorage after a CRAZY week in Juneau (folk music festival--and I don't normally care for folk music).

But if you'd rather wimp out and fly...

Who knew job searching could involve so much beer??!
