Lewis Terman (1916), who originally developed the notion of IQ, proposed this scale for classifying IQ scores:

Over 140 - Genius or near genius

120 - 140 - Very superior intelligence

110 - 119 - Superior intelligence

90 - 109 - Normal or average intelligence

80 - 89 - Dullness

70 - 79 - Borderline deficiency

Under 70 - Definite feeble-mindedness

An individual's IQ score remains relatively constant across their lifespan. Recently researchers have been addressing a different type of stability (or instability) in IQ scores--the fact that IQ scores have been steadily increasing in developed countries over the past 50 or 60 years. The so-called "Flynn effect" provides for an interesting discussion of environmental and cultural impact on IQ. The effect is named after political scientist James Flynn, who has researched this effect extensively. Azar (1996) reports in the APA Monitor on a recent (1996) conference of experts that focused on reasons for the Flynn effect. The APA-sponsored conference was titled "Intelligence on the rise: secular changes in IQ and related measures."

A particularly striking statistic is that the average IQ of a 20-year old in 1996 is approximately 15 points higher than that of a 20-year old 50 years ago. Most suspect that the rising IQ scores do not reflect a change in g, the global intelligence purportedly measured by traditional tests. Rather, escalating scores are thought to be the product of more specific skills that allow people to excel on tasks like those included in these tests, along with improved socioeconomic status, better nutrition, and an increasingly technological society.

Yeah, me and ol' Plato (minus the sodomy) Quite a conclusion from 2 pages of questions. The number that I got was substantially higher than other IQ results I've taken. My take on this: The test results are highly inflated and the "results" are just them blowing a bunch of sunshine up your tail in order to get you to buy the report. I notice that my results don't mention cynicism, funny they didn't pick up on that.

The online tests are only meant as entertainment, not as a true measure of your IQ

There are standardized IQ tests that can be taken, but apart from bragging rights if you really are a genius, I wonder if they're really worth it.

Plus, isn't 'Test the Nation' being done again in May/June?

Hmmmm,

I took it a second time, this time answering a whole bunch of them incorrectly. I still scored 115 and earned the title of "Precision Processor."... with a little picture of Pythagorus...which is ironic considering that the only question which involved the Pythagorean theorem, I marked incorrectly.

Third run through, I answered all incorrectly but about 3 or 4 which earned me an 84. According to Aileron Girl's scale that's dullness, but my description reads:

Not to be insulting...

but I have yet to find a website that doesn't overinflate results in an effort to get the test taker to buy something (i.e. more specific results regarding their particular metal superiority). Any certified psychologist can administer a battery of exams that more specifically identifies comprehension and cognitive reasoning and places it within a range that is more realistic. I have done every online IQ test I can find and scored in the highest area, but when I did the real test the results showed me in the average category.

Thats funny, sounds like their trying to get me to buy something.

I did this same test back in Nov 03 around thanksgiving (the site pops up when your surfing airliners.net), my score then was 127 and it said the same comments about being visual and math oriented.

Visual and math oriented I'll by but the score, well it doesn't sound like someone who failed the first grade, graduated mechanical engineering with a 2.2 gpa and decided to stay at Allegheny when offered a job at Airtran. IQ = retard on the job decision.

What is your IQ if you place stock in an Internet based test?

How do you make money and sell official test reports? By telling people the truth, that your IQ is around 90, perhaps lower and by the way you are a dumba$$? Perhaps you'd do better by telling people they are above average, but not so much that its not believable.

I'd put pilots with Telephone Operators or Electricians. Skilled labor. An average IQ of 100 to 110.

Apparently, the IQ gives a good indication of the occupational group that a person will end up in, though not of course the specific occupation. In their book, Know Your Child’s IQ, Glen Wilson and Diana Grylls outline occupations typical of various IQ levels:
