Normal people are smart and drive across town to buy a car.

Stupid pilots can fly a couple states away and make the process more complicated.

I've researched everything except tags/lisc. plates. A dealer would have temps but buying from a private party, there isn't that convenience. I just want to be able 2 drive home a couple states away and not be worried about being pulled over.

Anyone know?

Thanks in advance.

Sold a car in CA to a guy from AZ a few years back. Simple trip to the DMV and the guy had 30 day tags in CA. Not sure about the state you are buying in but I can't imagine that you are the first person to try this. Call the DMV in the state you are buying in and they should be able to set you straight.

Contact the DMV in the state you are making the purchase. They usually offer a temporary registration for a small fee with the proof of purchase (signed over title).

grab some old tags, slap them on and drive home. just hope you don't get stopped.
.....and have your car towed, and be jailed and stranded in a strange town.

A lot of states don't take substitute plates lightly...in my home state, it's a class one misdemeanor which means you go right to jail.

A lot of states have online solutions for problems like this. AZ has servicearizona.com where you can purchase and print a temp tag in the comfort of your own home.

Ask a Mexican how to do it as they seem to be able to drive around for months or even years with no license, no insurance and temp tags!

Thats how I lost out on a bunch of $$$ when I got totaled by one of these responsible persons :angryfire

I'm sure he was just hitting cars that Americans didn't want to hit themselves. :D

Sorry man, that sucks. Hasn't happened to me but with as many that live in a nearby city, I'm sure it's only a matter of time. No license, no insurance, no tags, no health insurance, no money, a .18 breathalyzer, no habla english, NO PROBLEM!! He's just a poor undocumented citizen that wants a piece of the American dream.

I'd better stop here........:uzi:

You need to check the laws in the state you reside in and the state you purchase the car in. They are different from state to state. In some states only dealers can purchase temporary 30 day plates. In some states if you have current tags from a car you sold you can use them on your next purchase. You must have the registration document showing the tag is in your name and usually have 30 days to register your new purchase. Again - check your state rules about notarized titles and bills of sale. Some states require them to be notarized, some don't. The big item now is proof of insurance. Most large insurance companies can email or fax you an insurance card the instant you sign the bill of sale. You must have an existing policy though.

I have done this several times and each one was a little different. If you buy from a dealer he can set you up with temp plates and will probably be required to verify you have an insurance card for the car before he lets you leave the lot. If you buy from an individual it gets a lot more complicated and risky.

Go to the tag agency in the town that you are purchasing the vehicle from and see if they can help.

Texas just requires that you have proof of purchase of the vehicle within the previous 20 business days. You can drive with no tag, and if you do get pulled over, you won't get ticketed as long as you have the signed over title/bill of sale
