Well, if I were asked for a final report on this accident just 3 days after it occurred, I would have to conclude:
Cause of accident was pilot's failure to maintain an altitude at or above the Minimum Descent Altitude prescribed for the Instrument approach used. Contributing factors to the accident was the location of a substantial body of water located near the airport and below the prescribed MDA as well as the inadvertant removal of the aircraft floats by a mechanic earlier that day.
Once again I say: A professional shouldn’t speculate with few or no facts.......could have hit a bird, (the area is filled with wintering waterfoul), engine failure, or a wing fell off – who knows? The reply by 100-1/2 was not only not funny but the fact is that one of us died on Christmas day.
I feel for the individual and his family...out of all days to have a fatality. This will be very hard on the family every time the Christmas holidays come around. I hope some day the family will be able to celebrate the holidays once again. It took my mother almost 30 years after dad passed way.
I agree with irapilot. I hope 100-1/2 was only trying to be clever, but his comments were of very poor taste.
As a fellow freightdog based in North Carolina (but for a different company), I am very familiar with Manteo and the area. That could easily have been me.
No matter what comes out of the investigation, our fraternity lost a pilot and a family lost a son on Christmas. Perhaps when 100-1/2 rereads his post, he will realize this as well and offer an apology.
Until you lose some friends in this business you may never understand how bad comments like yours can hurt.
All we should be saying at this point is let's hope he's resting with God and that there are some kind and caring people at the sides of his loved ones, family, and friends.
These kind of events shatter lives, families, careers, and companies. We've all made stupid mistakes while flying. Luckily we didn't pay the price.
