I just got a pair of HMEC-45s. That's the open ear Sennheiser version. I fly a Westwind and really like them. I haven't flown the ERJ but it has to be quieter than the Westwind. Do you really need a full cup headset in that thing? Anyway, very happy with the Sennheiser product. Light, comfortable, you can really tell the difference when you click on the ANR. But you can hear people talking and other noises outside the cancelled freq range. Does a good job killing fan, pack and wind noise.

I had the ANR500s and really liked them. I was so awed by the glamor of a light-weight noise cancelling headset that I sold the 500s and bought the Sennheiser 45s. Bad move. I fly the CRJ and I'm actually back to using my old DC head clamps. The 45s are fine for just a flight or two, but after about four legs with the wind noise and that blasted pack air coming from the vent 12 inches from my head I get a little testy! By the end of the day my hearing is so numbed I have the volumes turned all the way up. So I'm back to the whisper-quiet DCs. I'll pick looking like a dork with the big green headset in a jet over hearing loss and irritability!

My advice: if your ears can fit under the cups, go for the Telex 500s. Or if you really want to throw some more money into your career, get the Bose.

I had an ANR 500 several years ago and was pretty disappointed. The ANR is nearly worthless and the earcups weren't deep enough to accommodate my ears. The Telex ANR 200 was a much better, quieter, cheaper, and more comfortable headset but it was discontinued when they came out with the -500. I use a Bose X now and love it to death. I considered the Senn -25's but had the same problem as the Telex with the earcup shape (still trying to find a guy with perfectly round ears) and depth. The Senn's do have a significantly better ANR than the Telex though. Their quality is right up there with the Bose.

Easy choice-

Go with the Telex ANR500's. They are extremely comfortable, lightweight, and the anr works as advertised.

I bought a pair of the HMEC-25's and like them. They have a fair amount of clamping force on the head, so you feel them after about 6 hours. Passive noise reduction is good and ANR is excellent. Overall I like them much better than the ANR DC's I used to own. I use them in the CRJ but they work well in piston aircraft also. A nice feature is one of the earcups will rotate back 90 degrees so you can still hold a conversation w/o the intercom.

OK I'm seriously considering the sennheisers. Now my question is do I need the stereo model (HMEC 25KAS) or will the regular one (HMEC 25KA) be fine?

I have the ANR 500's (actually purchased them from someone in this thread!) and I like them in the ERJ. On long, 12 hour days, they get a little uncomfortable sitting on my ears, but I've found just moving them off my ear for about 5 or so minutes each couple flights or so alleviates that problem. They are much less uncomfortable than DCs, however. The ANR works well. Sometimes I don't even need to use it though. I can't comment on the other type. I have used Company supplied DCs, my old Flightcom Denali Passive, and the Telex ANR 500 and I like the latter most.

Stereo is not necessary. Get the straight HMEC-25KA.

I've heard some very good comments from a couple of friends of mine who use the telex in the crj. I have yet to try them. They fit over the ears nicely and lighter than the david clarks.

Telex ANR500 works great in the CE560 Ultra!

25-KAS has a volume control for each ear...the 25-KA does not. Your choice. I haven't had a single time where I wished that I had a -KAS over my -KA.

BTW - I sold my ANR 500 to get the 25-KA. Best thing I could have done.

Thanks for all the replies guys. j41driver, can I ask what you didn't like about the anr500's? It seems as though some people have had problems with them not being as reliable as the senns. Just wondered if that was the case for you or if it was something else. Thanks again!
