Anyone tried the Telex 850 in the CRJ? I like the fact that the ANR works from the plugs = no batteries. But how about the noise reduction? Is it worth it?
What do you guys use?

i used my 850 in a dash- 8 and an atr and it works great. anr is nice...although is not as much noise cancelling as the bose or another head clamp anr headset. you can still hear everything just fine.

I use it in the CRJ and have had good luck with it in terms of noise reduction. It doesn't cancel out everything, but it does the job for me. My only gripe with it is that certain ATC'ers are difficult to understand. Their volume is there but the quality sounds like they are talking through a sock.

I've done 4 hour legs with it and it never has become uncomfortable.

I've used the 850 for the last 2 years and I have no complaints. Comfortable, light weight, no batteries! I haven't had any issues with hearing ATC. If you have the $, I highly recommend them!!!

I have to debate between the Telex 850 or the Senheiser HMEC 25 KAP. Different headsets... The CRJ is a lnoisy still.. I don't know where Bombardier found that it was the quietiest airliner (maybe on the ramp at night.)

How do you guys afford these headsets, you work for a regional!!!

I'll second the kudos for the Telex 850. I find the noise reduction to be ample and I can't even tell I have it on. Of course, I already have some hearing loss from having been a ramp agent and flight attendant for the past 14 years but I don't find the CRJ to be that loud. It's definately quieter than the cabin on the 737-200. Good headset and it fits in the flight bag better than a pair of DCs.

I used the 850's when I was flying the CRJ and I thouoght they worked great. No problem hearing ATC or the using the intercom.

Mine work great in the ERJ....No batteries, more room in the flight case, good soud. No complaints

I tried out the Telex 850 in the CRJ (a 200, mind you, which is a lot quieter than a 700). I wanted desperately to like it for the reasons you specify, but it was just too loud. For you guys that don't think it's too loud, I'm a little concerned you may have suffered some hearing loss already.

After that I tried out the Sennheiser HMEC-25KA and liked it much better. It's a bit bulkier than the Telex, but due to the fact that it actually covers your ears, it provides sufficient noise reduction even if the batteries are dead. A set of two AAs lasts me about 6 full flying days. Obviously, you get better life with better batteries. In the end, the Sennheiser is what I bought. German engineering triumphs again.

For those of you wondering how I could afford it on a regional FOs salary, I got a fantastic deal during Sun-n-Fun (I didn't have to go personally) from an avionics shop down in FL. They sold me a "refurbished" headset, which means it was new, but an airshow demo. It was totally indistinguishable from new, though. Total price with the SkyWest discount and the Sun-n-Fun rebate was about $325. Try www.aviation-headset.com and see if they're running any deals. I'm not affiliated with them in any way, so I see nothing wrong with offering a reference here.

One word of advice: TRY BEFORE YOU BUY!!

By the way, the reason I ended up having to get a new headset is because I was getting interference between my David Clarkes and the windshield heat. It cause a continuous hum on the intercom that got louder if I turned my head a certain way or moved closer to the windows.

I use it in the ERJ but I'd say it is far from great. Good yes, but the ERJ is still loud enough that the 850 still requires ear plugs. Atleast I wear them since I'd still like to have some hearing in 20 yrs. I'd save the money and get the 750 since you'll still wear plugs. Or perhaps get the Clarity Aloft. I've heard good things about it in the ERJ.
