MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- A 16-year-old stole a Cherokee Piper from a nearby airport and spent a half hour scaring neighbors by flying just over the tree tops and swooping over police cruisers, police said.
Nathan Wyatt Frost of Rockvale was arrested Wednesday and charged with endangering the lives of Eagleville residents after police finally caught the youth when he abandoned the plane at the Murfreesboro Airport at 4:30 a.m.
Despite his antics, Murfreesboro Police Deputy Scott Daniel was impressed by Frost's ability to maneuver the plane and swooping up and down in order to "buzz" houses.
"The kid was a good pilot," Daniel said, comparing the sight to watching an air show.
According to police, Frost stole the red and white plane from owner Hank Williamson from the Shelbyville Municipal Airport late Tuesday night and flew over homes in Eagleville, scaring the residents and even forcing one family to rush out of the house.
Murfreesboro Detective Maj. Chuck Thomas said Frost is currently being held in juvenile detention and has been interviewed by Federal Aviation Administration investigators.
"We were glad he didn't get hurt or hurt anybody," Thomas said. "From what everybody said, he was a skilled pilot. He kept control."
Daniel noted in his report that an argument with another teen over Frost's girlfriend may have prompted the late night stunt show.
