You need a third class medical when:

"exercising the privileges of a flight instructor certificate,
except for a flight instructor certificate with a glider category rating, if
the person is acting as the pilot in command or is serving as a required
pilot flight crewmember"

What that's saying is that you need a 3rd class medical when acting as PIC (i.e. teaching primary students).
You don't need a medical at all when teaching commercial students or giving a BFR.
You also don't need a medical to act as a glider instructor.
