Just a word of warning to all of you gung ho wanna be military pilots out there that are thinking about getting inked. DON'T DO IT!

I was just talking with a Marines officer recruiter and everything was going fine until I informed him of a small, entirely coverable (with a watch) tat on my wrist. His response, "Any tattoo that can be seen while wearing shorts and short sleeves is currently DISQUALIFYING for any officer candidates."

Just wondering if anyone knows, does this apply to the Army or any other branch as well?

Take some sand paper to it and go seem him in a few weeks.

when i was in active duty, they started that, so some guys had to go down to get them removed. everything else was ok. that was back in 98 or 00..

It might be a good idea to talk with another recruiter if you have the ability to. I have heard that they're pretty strict with this tatoo stuff, but I also know that it is waiverable on a case by case basis, and I also know a guy about 2 doors down that got his naked women with nothing but dress blue trousers on and a cover belt sanded off so he could get MECEP. A lot probably depends on which OSO you were working with, and how many slots he needed to fill and how soon. Never give up, tats are an easy one from what I hear.

Yeah, my avatars are **CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED** old, I don't have my computer here at TBS, and I have a ton on it that I'd use, and am too lazy to make one off the net:)

I am fully sleeved and trying to go WOFT right now. Working on dropping some weight then I am applying. If not I will go enlisted and then WOFT. My recruiter said even with my sleeve and various other tattoos it shouldnt matter.
We will see though, I will at least go enlisted either way.

Army is not as anal about tattoos like the other branches are.
As long as it's not gang related you should be ok.

I don't think the ANG gives a hoot. Just as long as it isn't visible while wearing the uniform/flt suit. Bunch of guys in my unit have Tats.

Just got home from a military trip where we crew rested at a bunch of Navy bases.

At one Naval Air Station in Europe, I saw a USN enlisted troop -- he was a Security Forces troop, or whatever the USN equivalent of Security Forces would be -- with tatoos down the full length of both arms. He was in BDUs with the sleeves rolled up, on duty.

So, apparently, if you have a lot of tats, go Navy.

They were cool tats, too. Looked Maori, Samoan or Polynesian (but the individual definitely looked caucasian).

Kinda think it depends on how desperate the recruiter is. Heard though the grapevine that the "Recruiter Command" just had a down day to re-emphasize their responsibility to the actual military versus their immediate supervisor (and thus their annual performance report). I remember the day a young E-2 came through the door to our squadron with tattoo's around his neck, down his arms and culminating in the "8's" on each knuckle on his fists Seems that particular form of artwork was the only way the recruiter could figure out how to disguise the initials of the "French University of Central Kansas" that the youngster had tattoo'd there from his LA gang. Long story short: the kid was gone from the USAF within the month from confirmed assault/battery, drug and dereliction of duty charges. Just makes you wonder how he made it through the first 6 months of his short USAF career...
